"The mission of a community is to give life to others, that is to say, to transmit new hope and new meaning to them. Mission is revealing to others their fundamental beauty, value and importance in the universe, their capacity to love, to grow and to do beautiful things and to meet God. Mission is transmitting to people a new inner freedom and hope; it is unlocking the doors of their being so that new energies can flow; it is taking away from their shoulders the terrible yoke of guilt and fear. To give life to people is to reveal to them that they are loved just as they are by God, with the mixture of good and evil, light and darkness that is in them; that the stone in front of their tomb in which all the dirt of their lives has been hidden can be rolled away. They are forgiven; they can live in freedom." Jean Vanier, Community and Growth

Today is the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery in the U.K. largely due to William Wilberforce. I encourage everyone to try to get to see the film 'Amazing Grace' which tells this real story. I have seen some clips of it and it's incredibly moving. Here is a link where you can see video clips and hear the song that goes with it, and find out more information Amazing Grace Sunday

Oh Wow! I've just come across this web site about this 12 year old girl and her art. The art is absolutely brilliant, but she, even above that, is wise and beautiful.
Akiane-Her Life
look into that girls eyes - have a look round the site
look at the words she wrote to go with this painting...so perceptive and prophetic Akiane-Paintings I can't put a direct link to the painting those words go with, but look for it on the site in the age 11 Paintings.
found this video about her today. Akiane - Video

Who Am I? That is a question everyone asks at some time. There are a lot of different ideas about who we are. It is a good idea to know who God says we are, and to value ourselves and each other accordingly.
God's description of us is amazing. Before we know God, we are just creatures. We move and breathe, but the Biblical definition of real life is not yet in us.
When we give our lives to God, we become an entirely new creation. Our old selves have died, and something new is born. In Him, you are you... a real, living, thinking, walking, loving, eternal being. The Bible says He knew you before time began.
Some of the words God uses to describe us are: friend, offspring, bride, co-inheritors with Jesus, more than conquerors, kings and priests, beloved. When the Bible refers to us as God's offspring, it does not mean so much a lesser position as much as, "made of the same stuff", or "reflecting the same qualities".
When the Bible refers to us as "Bride", it does not so much mean a lesser position as much as, "worthy of", or "one with". In fact, in Ephesians, when it says that Jesus washed the church and "presented" her to Himself, the word "present" means "beside-standing"! Jesus is seated by the right hand of God, and we are IN Jesus.
It may be difficult to think of yourself as worthy enough to be in this position, but don't worry. It doesn't depend on you-- it depends on the Cross. It is a high position indeed, but we can't be proud of it-- just wildly joyful and thankful.
The Lord made you, bought you back, and then gave you to yourself to invest your freedom in the manner in which you choose.
Although there is nothing we can add to such a great salvation, we can certainly respond to the gift which He has given. And God has certainly equipped us to respond! With God's Spirit inside of us, we can be agents of God's Kingdom here on earth in the same way that Jesus was... loving and serving people.
Who are you? You. That is an amazing thing to be... there is no other you in the universe. And He wishes to call you Friend Don Francisco

Food Poisoning
Recently my husband and I went to an Italian restaurant and ate a tasty meal. About three hours later we realized something was really amiss. He appeared to have a case of food poisoning, and his symptoms were quite severe. His body knew there was something rotten in his system, and proceeded to repel it. There were several foods he had eaten at dinner which could have been the culprit ,and we never knew which one was so spoiled that it made him violently sick.
Isn't it interesting that our bodies tell us when something rotten has entered it, and it does so relatively quickly? But what happens when something enters our spirit and turns us sour? Just like the food incident, there are a variety of things which can enter our spirits and turn us sour. There is greed, adultery, lying, stealing, murdering, and many other things which keep us away from God. Satan is very crafty in his methods of spoiling our souls. He may work subtly or over a long period of time, or, he may move swiftly in his poisoning of our souls. When there is an obvious wrong that enters our life, we may have a "dose" of conscience, and seek repentance. However, when the poison is administered slowly, we may be unaware of the damage it is doing to us. This is when, I believe, we form "hardness of hearts."
I pray that I will always be in tune I with God, asking Him to reveal my wrongs to me. There is a verse in the Bible, Psalm 139:23,24, that says "Search me. O God, and know my heart; test my thoughts. Point out anything you find in me that makes you sad, and lead me along the path of everlasting life." It is one Christians should remember to pray every day. from Daily Wisdom

am re-reading this...
...It all begins in Bacon’s Corner, a tiny farming community far from the interstate . . . An attempted murder, a case of mistaken—or is it covered up?—identity, and a ruthless lawsuit against a struggling Christian school. Sally Beth Roe, a young loner, a burnout, a kind of “leftover hippie,”finds herself caught in the middle of these bizarre events, fleeing for her life while trying to recall her dark past. The human activities are overshadowed by the battle between angels and demons. This book holds its own alongside such popular authors as John Grisham and Michael Crichton, but also delivers a valuable perspective on Christian life: the interaction between the physical and spiritual realms. This book is entertaining, but beyond that, it is thought-provoking.

Been re-reading my M. Scott Peck books. The Road Less Travelled. Further Along The Road Less Travelled..and The Different Drum Had forgotten how good they are. Reviews:from M. Scott Peck Website
The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Confronting and solving problems is a painful process, which most of us attempt to avoid. This avoidance results in pain and the hampered ability to grow both mentally and spiritually. Drawing heavily on his own professional psychiatric experience, Peck suggests ways in which confronting and resolving our problems, and suffering through the changes, can enable us to reach a higher level of self-understanding. Dr. Peck discusses the nature of loving relationships: how to recognize true compatibility, how to distinguish dependency from love, how to become one's own person, how to be a more sensitive parent. Peck's first book, it has sold over 7 million copies and remained on the New York Times Best Seller List longer than any other paperback book. Further Along the Road Less Travelled: The Unending Journey Toward Spiritual Growth This book was developed from Dr. Peck's lectures, which he has expanded, co-edited, and transformed into a unified and compelling presentation of his ideas and insights. In this work, Dr. Peck addresses urgent questions of personal and spiritual growth, including blame and forgiveness, the issue of death and meaning, self-love versus self-esteem, and sexuality and spirituality. The book takes us from the first step in the spiritual journey, "Growing Up," to the next step, "Knowing Yourself," to the ultimate step, "In Search of a Personal God." An inspirational book, this work is a journey of self-discovery as well as an enlightening examination of the complexities of life and the paradoxical nature of belief. The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace In this powerful book, Dr. Peck challenges us to take another journey into self-awareness: to experience, through community, a new "connectedness" and wholeness which, in turn, can be shared with others. Dr. Peck describes the exiting process of community building, by which we join together, overcome our prejudices, transcend our differences, and learn to accept and love ourselves and each other. With fascinating stories and case histories, he reveals that the steps we must take toward achieving community are surprisingly similar to the steps we must take toward achieving wholeness and maturity in our own growth.>

I have just re-read the Narnia Chronicles for the 3rd time as an adult. They relax me and spiritually encourage me. In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we meet four English schoolchildren - Lucy, Edmund, Peter, and Susan - who go to stay with an eccentric professor during the evacuation of London in wartime. Occupying themselves with a game of hide-and-seek in the large house, they discover that through the fur coats in an old wardrobe is another world: the land of Narnia. There they meet talking animals who are very interested to meet "Sons of Adam" and "Daughters of Eve." The children learn of the oppressive reign of the evil White Witch, who has caused it to be always winter but never Christmas. Bribed with magically-enhanced Turkish Delight, Edmund betrays his friends to the Witch, putting all of their lives in danger. The only hope for the children and the Narnians is the lion Aslan, who ultimately defeats the White Witch by dying at the hands of the Witch in Edmund's place. When he comes back to life a short while later, the snow melts and Spring finally comes to Narnia.

"The Left mocks the Right. The Right knows it's right. Two ugly traits. How far should we go to understand each other's point of view? Maybe the distance grace covered on the cross is a clue." -Bono, lead singer of U2

Most people are more comfortable with old problems than with new solutions Don't be afraid to admit you were wrong. It's like saying you're wiser today than you were yesterday Your friends will either stretch your vision or choke your dream Leadership is servanthood. Observation of this truth keeps your motives pure and protects you from ambition. It also makes you like Jesus The young man knows the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions Oliver Wendell Holmes. When you're through changing, you're through Bruce Barton. I not only use all the brains I have, but all I can borrow Woodrow Wilson. In youth we want to change the world. In old age we want to change youth One fifth of people are against everything all the time Robert Kennedy Do not follow where the path may lead. Follow God instead to where there is no path and leave a trail
