was talking to Will today, and he was telling me about the grocery delivery dude that dropped off his sisters groceries. He said the guy just stood there with this smug look on his face, like he was expecting a tip or something. Well was he going to put them away for her? Or even carry them in for that matter? No. Was he doing anything extra, other than the normal duties of his job description? No.
Then the question is- why does he need a tip? If he deserves a tip, then so does the grocery checker, and the bag boy, and the quickie mart attendant, and the dude at taco bell, and the girl at Macy*s who brings you your shoes, and the mailperson, and the crossing guard...

Now don't get me wrong, i'm not a cheapskate. And I used to be a waitress, so I know how important tips are. Waitresses work for very little money, and they work their butts off, and tips are their real salary. Plus- when you go to a restaurant, you are paying for service. So when you get really good service, and the server goes out of their way to please you, you show your appreciation by leaving a tip. Its customary. Its been that way forever. The grocery delivery dude didnt do anything out of the ordinary. He got in his green grocery delivery van like he's supposed to, drove to the house like he's supposed to, carried the bags to the porch like he's supposed to, and set them down. Nothing extra. Nothing special. No tip needed.

I think this tip thing has gotten out of hand. I see tip cups all over the place now. At the drive through in starbucks, at the local sandwich joint, I saw one at baskin robbins last week. Since when did it become neccessary to tip someone for making you a coffee and handing it to you in the drive through? I mean really- what warrants the tip? Besides, there are like 5 people working behind that counter. I have no idea who made my coffee. So who am I tipping anyway? Im just throwing my money in a cup so they can all split it up later? As if the damn coffee didnt cost enough anyway!

I do nice things for people all the time. I go out of my way and I havent seen one damn tip yet. I think I am going to start carrying around a cup with me. And I can take those colorful markers and decorate the plastic cup like they do and write "feeling tipsy?" on it with stupid little flowers and shit. Maybe the next time I hold open the door for someone they will drop in some coin. Or how bout when I compliment the lady in line at the bank on her cool looking purse. She may toss me a buck. Or how bout when I let the guy at the grocery store go in front of me because he only has two items. I think thats worth a few quarters, dontcha think? And finally I should definitely have one on the counter in the kitchen so my kids can give me a tip when I make a snack for them.

Think i'm crazy? We'll see who's the crazy one when I start making some cash! LOL!
