Well alas, I actually had a semi-fun day at work. A lot of my frustration, apart from a somewhat stuffy environment where I can't do things that lots of other coders do - like listen to headphones - is due to boredom by the projects I work on and knowing that most of the things I do will never see the light of day. Sure, the daily tweeks and additions to summary.com and the like get viewed daily, but none of the larger, more-than-100-hours-of-coding projects I've been a part of have been released live to the public. However, this week some clients got letters with trial accounts to beta-test the new DynaComm website, which enables users to "design" their own custom signs and posters, rather than submitting vague textual descriptions to the art department. A combo of a little java applet I wrote combined with some controlling javascript, fetching text images rendered by Image::Magick on the server makes it all happen. Though, viewing in anything other than Internet Explorer is completely fucked at the moment ;)In addition to talking to one client who actually liked it, today, I also got around to porting the Text Image rendering cgi scripts to mod_perl. Yum. Still needs some more tweeking, but I have seen some definite speed increases :)While playing with mod_perl though, a bug in my code actually led me to discover that Image::Magick's crop function will crop out the extraneous padding around a graphic rendering in the image (if you set a color, like the background, to be transparent) given zero arguments like "0x0+0+0". If You Wanna Be My Lovah, Consult the stars!. . This sped things up immensely (From a approximately 1.6s to 100 ms to render "hello" at, say, 30 pt), as the slowest part of the code was the sub looping through the rgb colors of ImageToBlob() to figure out what bounds it should crop at.So all in all, it was a nice day. The Real World - SGA episode review. Who sings this song, it sounds like a tranvestite!. . . Got to visit the Starbucks near work too, for the first time in over 2 weeks, which was nice, since Zagara's, the only other place that will make a soy latte near work, is slow and produces crappy-tasting coffee. Weekend, yay..

So I went golfing yesterday. My best friend (and college roomate) Joe came up from DC to hang out yesterday, and we went golfing. I hadn't been golfing since last season, mostly due to laziness and such.Anyway, we went to the Philadelphia Quartett Club, which is where we always used to go in late high school, and summers during college. It's a nice little par-54 course, good for people who don't feel like spending 4+ hours hacking around. So we're playing, I'm shooting okay, hitting some nice golf shots here and there, putting like shit (as usual), and we come upon the 6th hole. Boom, I drive the green. Boom I put it in for a birdie, which was only the 3rd time in my life I've accomplished that (an eagle is 2-under par, a birdie is 1-under par.) Yay for me!So we move on to the next hole, hole 7. It's a 141 yard hole, with a giant pond right in front of the green. I've lost many a ball to this pond, and have always considered water to be my nemesis on the golf course. They added a nice-looking fountain to the middle of the pond since the last time we went there (last year) to add to the ambience, perhaps to make us forget we're playing golf in the middle of Northeast Philadelphia.I grab my 9 iron and tee up. I've been experimenting with my stance all day, not having been to a driving range yet this season, I'm kinda winging it the whole day to get back in my groove. I space my feet 6 inches apart, decide not to take a practice swing, wind up and smack, the ball's up in the air. Possibly the most perfect golf shot I have ever taken, straight up, nice distance, good arc no hook or slice. Joe shouts "get legs get legs!" thinking the ball's going to wind up splashing down in the water. Instead, the ball lands smack in the center of the green, inches from the pin. It rolls.. and plop, drops right into the cup. I'm fairly astonished because the chances of getting a hole in one are pretty slim, pure luck I suppose, but it felt real good :) I called my parents' to tell them the news, I figure my dad will be pretty psyched, but noone's home. I guess Sparkie got to hear my "I got a hole-in-1" message ;)Anyway, this must be a message from above that I'm meant to be playing golf, not sitting in a cubicle every day, right? :)

Funny, I was just kinda mocking the whole blogs-are-cool thing the other day, with my friend. Heh.Watched donnie brasco last night, for the millionth time. i'm boldly declaring johnny depp as one of the top 5 actors of my era, which means they've made at least a couple great movies in the 24 years i've been around. The others? hmm, maybe, in no particular order, denzel, gene hackman, pacino, and deniro.
