Eurovison Song Contest- Semi Final. Magic, Vampires and Funky Belgiums!

I’m extremely excited about the semi-final tonight! Though it’s not a patch of the cheese-tastic final, and doesn’t feature Terry Wogan’s witty banter, it’s still a chance to enjoy ,gasp and laugh at the amazing costumes, crazy gimmicks and unexplainably awful song lyrics. My favourite being Belarus, with ’Work your magic’. It’s catchy, has a crazy video and the lead singer is a bit of a hottie! Other people to look out for in the semi -final include Belgium with the ‘Love Power‘ an apparent contender to win and Switzerland with ‘Vampires Are Alive” which is like ‘Van Helsing’ the Dance Remix, all you need is Kate Beckinsale with a dodgy Romanian accent.

Catch it on BBC3 at 8pm!

Chapter Seven: Part Three

I felt frustrated Stables wasn’t doing anything about the masked man’s threat, and his promise to heighten palace security was proving to be of little comfort to me. I dragged myself off the table and headed back to my room. It was a welcome relief to change back into my own clothes and slip on my boots, as the borrowed shoes had covered my feet in numerous angry blisters. I was planning to head back down to the ball, and keep my eye out for anything suspicious, as I had a feeling I hadn’t seen the last of my mysterious dance partner.

I ascended the ballroom’s main staircase for the second time that evening, and this time I fortunately managed to make it to the bottom unharmed. I strolled through the gossiping crowds, drawing astonished glances and glares as I passed. I figured this was due to the fact I was wearing trousers and cowboy boots at a royal ball, however I felt a lot more comfortable than I did in an extravagant ball gown. I carried on walking before stopping beside one of the ornate pillars in the centre of the room, leaning backwards I surveyed the scene. Finely attired girls were gathered in groups, giggling behind their hands and whispering to one another as handsome men not-so-casually inspected them from afar. It was kind of like the joint schools dance that was held every year before Christmas, Gina and I would use the event as an excuse for a new outfit and an opportunity to catch up on school gossip. The night would usually involve some of the older boys turning up plastered, girls in minuscule ensembles’ trying to bag a slow dance with the captain of the rugby team and of course, copious amounts of snogging. Though I usually found attending the dance unappealing, I would have given anything to be huddled in a corner with Gina, sniggering at the awful dirty dancing and purposely avoiding the mistletoe, carefree and not knowing the world of Ellivor ever existed.
Though the reality was, I was here and I would have to deal with that, however difficult it was. My eyes scanned fervently for the man from the gardens, but my search was proving fruitless. I noticed Stables by a flowing fountain of deep purple wine, standing amidst an adoring group of girls, eyeing him up hungrily like a pack of ravenous wolves. I couldn’t make out what he was saying over the din of the ball, but the wolves/girls were hanging onto his every word.
He glanced up and caught me glaring. We silently fumed at each other across the room, until he tore his eyes away, his mouth twisted into a frown. I saw him shake his head and continue to charm his audience with what I assumed were more witty anecdotes of aristocratic life.
“Smarmy git!” I mumbled under my breath, before heading over to a table spread with a selection of delicious looking treats. If in doubt , chocolate would make me feel better. I reached over for a tasty looking cupcake that was just yelling at me to devour its sugar-sprinkled goodness. My hand halted abruptly when I realised the desert was actually speaking the words,
“Mmm I’m delicious!” , In a voice not dissimilar too that of a smurf. I hastily changed my mind about drowning my sorrows with confectionary if it meant murdering an innocent dessert in the process.

Chapter Seven: Part Two

For once I didn’t mind taking orders from Stables, so I fell quickly followed him up the main stairs to a small, dusty room, which was probably more of a big cupboard than a room. Stables pulled out a seat and gestured for me to sit down. I shook my head and leant against the table instead.

“Dangerous intruder?” he asked gravely, crossing his arms.

“In the gardens, well he was before he disappeared.” I replied. Stables regarded me across the table and raised an eyebrow.

“Disappeared? Do you mean by magic?” I nodded and continued.

“He cast some kind of weird spell over me, and said since I wasn’t one your spies he wouldn’t kill me, and then we danced…” I paused feeling embarrassed, but pressed on, “He may still be around, he could be at the ball, he was wearing a mask after all.” Lord Stable shook his head slowly.

“It would not be possible for him to attend the royal ball.”

“Why not?” I asked confused.

“Only peers of the realm are invited to the midsummer ball, and no individual of noble blood can yield magic in Ellivor.” He answered slowly.

“I don’t think a party invitation is going to stop him from trying. He doesn’t seem very keen on the ‘highborn’, as he put it.” Stables looked slightly surprised by my outburst.

“Miss Fox, my guards will insure no intruder shall enter the ball, I can assure you of that.”

“Well how did he get into the palace grounds in the first place, Genius protector of the palace, eh?” Stables looked perturbed at first, but after a few seconds he gave a faint smile.

“Thank you for pointing out the cracks in palace security. I shall call upon the Royal Wizard to cast an additional protection enchantment at once.” He paused and asked, “Oh, you still haven’t explained why you were dancing with the aforementioned intruder?”. Uh Oh, I had really hoped he wasn’t going to ask about that. I fiddled with my sleeves, and mumbled in what I hoped to be a casual way.

“I said I was under a spell, didn’t I. It wasn’t like I wanted to salsa with him!”

“I see,” Stables murmured in a strange voice before walking over to the door, he turned round and our gaze met. “Goodnight Miss Fox” he called over softly, his green eyes glinting slightly. The door clicked shut and I sat down on the dust-smothered table.

“Goodnight” I heard myself whisper slowly, though I didn't know why.

Chapter Seven: Part One

Once he was gone, I felt the cold chill leave the air, though my confusion still lingered like his chilling kiss. Sitting down on the fountains edge, I gazed at my distorted reflection. I don’t think I had ever felt so mixed-up, I was only just starting to adjust to my surroundings and the situation, though now my mind was in a muddle. Why had he decided to spare my life?
“There you are!” looking up I saw my two friends looking somewhat flustered.
“Are you ok? We’ve been looking for you for ages.” Caitlyn called out, approaching the fountain. At that moment I didn’t know how I felt, but I knew what I had to do.
“I have to see Lord Stables immediately.” Gina and Caitlyn stared at me, as if I’d just announced I was going to elope with a clown called Bobo and become a lion-tamer.
“Wait, did you just say you wanted to talk to Girven? Are you feeling ok?” I ignored Gina’s last question and sighed.
“As much as it pains me to say it, yes.”
Caitlyn looking baffled, scratched her head and not-so-slyly whispered to Gina.
“Do you think she’s drunk?” I let out a low growl and Caitlyn put her hands out in surrender.
“Whoa there! So if you not under the influence, why on earth do you want to talk to Lord Stables, I thought you hated the guy?” Shuffling my feet uncomfortable, I avoided eye contact with them and muttered.

“I’ll explain later on, but now I’ve got to go.” I hurried past my perplexed friends and onto the path which led out of the secluded grounds. I wanted to tell them what had happened with the masked man, yet I felt strangely embarrassed, and I knew there was a small part of me that was thrilled when he had complimented me on breaking the spell. I scurried onwards until I could make out the entrance, just beyond a thick clump of trees. I took a deep breath and walked on to the palace, I really didn’t want to face Stables yet, after the whole ‘falling into his arms’ situation. I was just beginning to realise how stupid it must have appeared when I had ran away earlier, I should have stayed and kept my cool, instead of fleeing the ball and becoming the laughingstock of Ellivor.
I held up my head, patted down my gown and lifted up my mask, before striding confidently into the bustling ballroom. I saw a few heads turn at my arrival, though thankfully to my relief, no-one paid me much attention and again commenced their flirting, gossiping and fan-wafting. I spun around in wide circles, trying to locate Stables in the crowded space. After many frantic minutes of searching, I leapt, rather unladylike, onto a long wooden table adorned with candles of every colour. I knew from the scandalized glances I was attracting, this was a definite social faux-pas, but if I couldn’t find Stables soon, people might be in danger.
“Yo, Stables!” I bellowed loudly, making nearly everyone spin round in my direction. I felt my face grow hot, as everyone stared in disbelief at my behaviour. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all…
And that’s when I spotted him, soberly dancing with a pretty girl in a long purple dress. He halted mid-step when he noticed me staring at him from atop the candle table, hands on hip. He gradually let go of his partner’s hands and stepped back. giving her a short bow.
“Lady Fox?” He called over casually, with a slight grin. I hopped down off the table and made my way over to him.
“Was there a reason for your tabletop performance?” He asked as I approached.
“Does a dangerous intruder in the palace grounds count?” I replied impatiently. The grin disappeared from his face and his eyes narrowed.
“Follow me.”

Chapter Six: Adventures In Ellivor

Chapter Six

“Are you ready yet?” I heard Caitlyn shout from behind the door, for the fifth time in two minutes. I ran my fingers through my hair as I slipped the mules on; I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and sighed. The dress fitted me perfectly, though I still felt slightly uncomfortable attending the ball.
“I suppose so.” I replied half-heartedly. The door quickly clicked open and in came Caitlyn, chewing on a shiny red apple.
“You look great!” She cried, spitting chunks of apple at me. “Oops, sorry about that.” she said apologetically, as I wiped fruity pulp off the front of my dress.
“It’s cool.” I laughed at her anxious face, and noticed she also had now changed into her gown. “You look very glam, I must say.” Caitlyn giggled and gave a twirl. It certainly felt strange to see my friend look so ladylike, as she usually favoured the Punk look, complete with tartan trousers and black leather jacket. Though she wasn’t too happy when I told her the trousers made her look as if she worked in the tourist information centre.
“Ah, why thank you Lady Fox.” She responded with a curtsy.
“Lady! I doubt it.” I spluttered, falling back into the nearest armchair. Caitlyn gave me a wicked grin and sat down in the chair next to mine.

“So, I assume you haven’t heard the plan yet?” This caught my attention.
“I don’t like the sound of this.” I muttered, my smile now twisting into a grimace. Caitlyn winked impishly.
“Well you can blame the Prince, it was his bright idea.” I crossed my arms and waited for the explanation. “Ceran says we are to call ourselves by the title of ‘Lady’, and we are visiting noblewomen from the eastern mountains.” This sounded so ludicrous I burst out laughing.
“Are you serious, like anyone will believe that?” Caitlyn looked equally amused by the thought of us masquerading as aristocracy.
“Yeah, I don’t think he wants his Mum to know, he’s hanging out with lowly peasants like us.” This made us laugh even more.

“Silence commoners! It’s the dungeons for you!” Boomed out an imperious voice from behind us, we both froze, too afraid to turn round. Heels clacked against the stone floor, as the unknown person inched ever closer. When they eventually stopped just behind me, I slowly forced myself to turn round. Instead of being immediately forced into handcuffs for treasonous behaviour, I was greeted by Gina resplendent in her ball gown, trying desperately hard not to laugh.
“Hah, you totally thought you were busted!” So relieved I wasn’t going to be imprisoned, I was speechless, though that didn’t last long.
“Gina…I am actually going to kill you for that!” I shouted, springing up and chucking a cushion at her. She smiled mischievously and threw it back as we all roared with laughter. I have no idea how Gina acquired the ability to put on countless different voices, though it was a useful skill. Especially when I wanted to get out of P.E and she used my mobile to pretend to be my Gran.

“It’s Lady Gina to you!” She giggled, giving us a royal wave. Her smile faded a little and she said. “I’m sorry about earlier, I should have stuck with you guys instead of staying with Ceran and Girven.” I nodded and fiddled with my sleeve.

“Yeah I was kind of annoyed.” I admitted looking up at my friend.
“Is that because of your thing for Girven?” Gina asked smiling at Caitlyn. I clenched my wrists.
“For the last time, I do not like Stables!” I nearly screamed in return. My friends looked more tickled than ever.
“Fine, I won’t bring it up again, though he is rather interested in you…” Gina replied.
“I don’t want to know.” I answered curtly. I could still them giggling quietly when there came a knock upon the door, and the girl from earlier entered.
“Apologies for the intrusion, though I am to tell you the Midsummer Ball is about to commence.”
“Shall we Ladies?” Caitlyn asked us in her most regal voice. I exchanged a look with Gina before nodding.
As we followed the girl down the hall, she turned to Caitlyn and asked.
“Do you mind if I ask a question m’lady?” My friend smiled and shrugged.
“Yeah, sure.” looking nervous, The girl cleared her throat audibly before speaking.

“Please don’t be offended, though I could have sworn I saw you in the kitchens earlier, eh, cooking.” She looked down at the floor, as if she was frightened to see Caitlyn’s reaction.
“Yeah, the kitchens are great here! Dansa is a brilliant chef,” She turned to us and added. “But he’s still not a patch on Gordon.” The girl looked astonished.
“That was really you? I’ve never heard of Nobles assisting in the kitchens before.”

“Well in our, um, part of the country, we like to help out.” Caitlyn explained looking to me and Gina for help.
“Oh,” I jumped in. “Don’t they do that here? I’m Tabbie by the way, you don’t need to call us by any titles.” Gina and Caitlyn also introduced their selves and the girl looked taken aback, then smiled slightly.

“Jesa Redberrer,” She said. “Are you quite certain your Ladies?” When she said that, I was sure we’d been rumbled.

“Why’d you ask?” Gina enquired, trying to sound calm.

“Oh no offence meant. It’s just I have never been asked my name before. Most noblewoman are usually more concerned if their hair is arranged correctly.” We all shared a smile, as Gina discreetly tried to pat down her hair .

“Well, here I must leave you all.” Jesa said a few seconds later, pointing to a door with golden leaves painted round the edge. We were in a corridor near the stairway to the main hall, though I didn’t know why we were stopping here when we must have been pretty late already. Jesa knocked lightly on the door and stood back. The door sprung open, and a man with large bulging eyes and an equally bulging belly appeared before us. He saw Jesa ,then the three of us standing awkwardly behind her.

“What have I told you about punctuality girl! Now go at once and help your mother in the cloakroom.” Jesa curtsied, scowling at the man.

“Goodbye!” She waved cheerily at us, before scurrying down the hallway. The man peered after her with a look of obvious disdain.

“ I do apologise for her behaviour, she is incompetent and insolent, and I shall see to it she is punished.” Even though I had only just met this guy, my first impression was not a good one.

“There will be no need for any punishment, she was very helpful.” Gina answered rapidly. The man, to my annoyance looked slightly disappointed before mumbling.

“As you wish m’lady.” And led us into the room.

We walked through the lavishly decorated room, and outside onto a balcony overlooking the Palace entranceway. Illuminated in the sunset stood the Prince and Stables, looking down at the dozens of carriages and horses parading through the gates. The Prince swivelled round to see us standing there.

“Ah Ladies, nice of you to join us,” He announced bowing, Lord Stables was still gazing out over the grounds. “Ah Drenton, you are dismissed” He said, as the unpleasant man nodded and walked back indoors.

“You all look splendid, I must say.” The prince leant forward and kissed Gina’s hand delicately. Gina looked surprised yet positively delighted. I don’t think I had ever seen any man have that effect on Gina before, usually she was so composed when it came to guys. Stables then walked over to join us, he was wearing a suit of navy velvet, decorated with ornate silver buttons and a crisp white shirt. He looked a bit like an 1980’s New Romantic, all he needed was some make-up. I couldn’t help but snigger at the thought of Stables applying lipstick atop his horse.

“Something amusing…Tabitha?” Stables voice cut short my thoughts.
“What did you just call me?” I asked slowly, I despised being called that and I sensed he knew that.
“Tabitha is your name is it not? I doubt Miss Freeman would give me false information.”
When I got hold of ‘Miss Freeman’ she would start wishing she had given him false information.
“Look, Stables,” I snarled leaning closer “If you call me that again, you are so going to regret it!” Lord Stables leant forward and looked me in the eye.
“How so?” I felt uneasy at his proximity to me, though I wasn’t going to back down.
“Think this morning, but ten times worse you egotistical…”
“Tabbie look at this view!” Caitlyn called over from the balcony’s edge. I stopped talking and glared at Stables, who gave me a mocking bow before I stormed off to join Caitlyn.
After a few minutes of watching various carriages pull up, the Prince called us back inside. Laying upon a small table were five masks.
“The Midsummer Masque has been a royal custom in Ellivor for many generations.” Prince Ceran then went on to explain the event in great detail, though I lost interest quite quickly, Gina hung on to his every word. I picked a lace mask a similar colour to my dress, flower patterns carved into the wooden handle.
“Now, I think we are ready to make our entrance.” declared Ceran, holding aloft a red feathered mask.
We finally reached the corridor which led to the ballroom’s staircase.

“May I request the privilege of escorting you?” Ceran inquired, offering Gina his arm. The pair smiled at each other and walked ahead to descend the staircase together. Lord Stables turned to Caitlyn.
“Shall we Miss McKee?” looking startled Caitlyn replied.
“Sure.” And so they both walked ahead and down the stairs. So there I was on my own, which suited me fine, though Caitlyn was a complete traitor for joining forces with Stables. I waited around for a few minutes before following, as entering the ball on my own was a bit of a daunting prospect. Holding the lace mask to my face I headed for the staircase.

Stopping at the top of the staircase, I gazed down at the hundreds of people milling around below me in the scintillating ballroom. Many of them stopped and noticed me frozen to the spot. I knew I would have to start walking or look like a complete idiot. So trying to appear more confident than I felt, I began to tread carefully down the wide marble steps. My foot reached for the bottom step when it all went wrong. My mule heel, managed to catch on the bottom of my dress and I flew forward, heading for the floor, however before I hit the ground I felt two arms catch me. My head was spinning as I looked up to see a familiar face looking down at me.

“Aah!” I cried, springing out of Lord Stables arms. Without another word I hurried through the crowds of people in the direction of the gardens.
I found a suitable hiding place under a flower covered trellis, beside one of the many fountains dotted around the grounds. I picked up some small stones and skimmed them across the clear water. I had no idea how long I’d been sitting there, though it must have been a while since the sun had long since set, and lanterns had flared into life at the Palace. There was no way I was going back into the ball after what happened.

“So this is Tabbie Fox, the girl who foiled my spies.” I heard someone say behind me, as I a stone plopped into the water. I had no idea what they were talking about, and had no interest in listening.
“Do me a favour and bog off.” I sighed crossing my arms. Instead of the person going away as I hoped, I heard footsteps draw nearer.
“You’re a fiery one aren’t you.” The mystery person replied from close behind.
“Right that’s it!” I groaned turning round. I made out a figure in the darkness, the only part of his face visible, was his mouth since a black mask hid the rest of his features.
“And beautiful too, it would be such a shame to kill you.” I was starting to feel a little frightened, so I decided to take drastic action. I moved quickly to punch the masked creep and make a quick getaway. Just as I was about to hit him, he clicked his fingers and I felt my eyes cloud over. The masked figure seized my hands and whispered.

“That should control you for the time being.” I tried to remove myself from his grasp, but it was as if my brain wasn’t letting me. I opened my lips to speak, though I couldn’t get the words out. I was whirled around and into a slow, deliberate dance.
“I was rather displeased when Erlin and Marblin failed me. Though now I know your not one of Girven Stables spies, we may be able to come to some sort of arrangement.” Said the masked man spinning me under his right arm, I still couldn’t make out his face. I closed my eyes and concentrated hard, trying to clear the muddle my head was in. My body was telling me to relax, though I knew I had to break this spell, my mind seemed to be under.

“Concentrate.” I chanted over and over in my head, as I swayed to a silent melody.
“I know you’re not from this world, though I do not understand why you choose to keep company with those highborn idiots.” Just when I started to give up, the mist in my eyes cleared slightly and I managed to splutter.
“I’d rather hang out with them, than sleazy guys like you!” I tried to move my hands but they were still out of my control. He turned his head to the moonlight and I could make out his lips curl into a twisted smile.
“How impressive. I’ve never encountered anyone who could break a manipulation spell.” Power surged back into my arms.
“Maybe you should get out more.” I quipped, breaking free from his grip. The masked man leant down and kissed my hand.
“Farewell Tabbie Fox.” And before I could respond he faded into the dark night, as if he had never existed.

Chapter Five: Part Two

I felt like running and diving headfirst onto the grub-filled table, though luckily I managed to pull myself together before acting upon my hunger. We were shown to our seats by a stout middle-aged woman, complete with an outrageous head of light-brown corkscrew curls.
“How fared your hunting? You could have told me there were guests; I just hope there’s enough for everyone!” Ceran smiled at her and replied.
“Oh Jancie don‘t fret, I’m sure there’s enough to go round. Anyway have you seen my mother this morning?”
“I’m told her Highness is in the West wing drawing room, finalising the musicians for tonight.” The Prince frowned.
“If she asks for me, tell her I’m still hunting. I do not think I can stand any more discussions about flower arrangements,” He paused and added.
“Oh, and could you see to it, my three guests receive suitable attire for tonight’s festivities?”
The curly-haired woman groaned huffily.
“This is the last time I tell lies to your mother, Ceran!” She scolded him, and then added. “I’ll send someone to the royal dressmakers immediately, but at this late stage I can’t promise anything.”
“Thank-you kindly, Jancie” The prince said smiling, as she stomped out the door.
Caitlyn looked as if she was considering eating her fork by this stage, though luckily, Prince Ceran reached for a slice of bread and everyone else began to fill their plates. By the time I finished loading my plate up with a mountain of food. I had three sugar-coated pastries, two slices of heavily buttered toast, four sausages, some blackberries and a chunk of what appeared to be cheese. Lifting a delicious looking sausage to mouth, I stopped mid bite when I realised everyone was staring at me, except from Caitlyn who was still putting slabs of bread on her plate.
“I now understand why Jancie was concerned about a food shortage” Stables quipped, taking a crisp bite of his apple, as everyone else erupted into laughter. I narrowed my eyes at him, stuffing the whole sausage in my mouth.

Whilst me and Cait, had been filling our empty stomachs to the brim. Gina had slowly managed a small slice of bread and some strawberries whilst she was chatting with Ceran. I really couldn’t understand how she could eat so little, since she has probably gone longer without food than me and Cait, owing to her dislike of airplane cuisine. After some time, and another pastry, my stomach finally felt full. I swigged down some water from a goblet beside me and slumped back in my chair satisfied. Caitlyn laid down her knife and fork a few minutes later.
“Thanks for breakfast .Though I have to say the eggs could have done with more pepp…” Gina nudged her to shut up.
“Yeah cheers, it was tasty,” I said, then added. “Also about the Ball, we probably shouldn’t go, so you don’t need to go to any trou…ow.” Gina was now nudging me to stop talking. I felt bad about the Prince going to the trouble of finding us dresses for the ball, after he had already escorted us to the city and provided breakfast.
“We don’t have any money to pay for dresses though,” I continued trying to ignore Gina’s disappointed face. “So I think its best we don’t go, but thank you for everything.” Prince Ceran looked a little surprised, and then smiled.
“If you all agree to attend the midsummer’s ball is payment enough,” He stopped and said. “Gina, I would be delighted if you would join me for the first dance of the evening.” The Prince’s question made her mouth gape slightly open for a second, before she regained the power of speech again.
“I’d love to.” Gina beamed back at him. I looked over at Caitlyn, and she shrugged back, we both knew we would have to go to the ball, or else never hear the end of it from Gina.

A few minutes later there came a knock at the door, and a girl entered saying she was sent by Jancie to take us to our rooms. Caitlyn and I followed her down the corridor and up four floors, until we reached a room overlooking the Palace grounds. It was a pleasant room with a large wooden bed, curved window seat and attractive paintings adorning the walls. With a curtsey the serving girl told us the two rooms adjoining were also set aside for us and scurried out the door. Gina was still back in the breakfast room schmoozing with Ceran and Lord Stables, and had told us to go ahead without her.

It was typical of Gina to do this; every time there was a guy involved she would suddenly become all love struck and forget we existed. Usually I didn’t mind, as it was part of Gina personality we all knew and accepted. Though the fact we were trapped in another world and all she wanted to do was flirt with a fairytale Prince was starting to annoy me. Caitlyn flopped down onto the bed, whilst I stretched out on the window seat and stared thoughtfully out at the immaculate grounds. I took out my mother’s book from my pocket and began to read.
I had examined the small book almost cover to cover. When I heard the door creak open. The book was blank on every page apart from my mothers name at the beginning; I needed another solution to get home. Gina skipped in though the door and waltzed around the room, humming to herself. I ignored her and put the book back in my pocket.
“I’m going out.” I announced heading for the door. Caitlyn, who was napping on the bed, awoke and yawned.
“Yeah, I think I’ll check out the kitchens and see if I can pick up any hints.”
Gina who was still twirling around, landed in an armchair, giggling.
“And I. Shall be preparing for the Ball.”

I wandered around the maze-like corridors, trying to figure out how to get back to the entrance hall. After four wrong turns, I made it out the door and down the front steps, saluting the guards as I went by. It was a long walk to get back to the city, but I didn’t really mind, as I had been on a horse enough that day. When I reached the street I had been only a few hours before, looking up I checked that the sign which mentioned the sorcerer was still there, and I hadn’t imagined it. Entering the empty alleyway with caution, I strode on until I saw a doorway, lit lanterns on either side. It was only early afternoon but in the dark alleyway the lamps were definitely needed.
I was starting to feel nervous, the sign had said after all.
‘By appointment only’ this was an emergency however, and desperate times called for desperate measures. I knocked lightly upon the old door and waited for a response. There was no reply so I knocked again, this time much harder. And still there came no reply.
I twisted round the door knob and stepped inside. I couldn’t see anything or anyone as it was pitch black. I was just about to turn back when there was a flash and light filled the room. Hundred of candles had just sparked into life all around me and I could see thousands of books scattered on towering shelves, rickety tables and almost anywhere there was space for them.
“Do you have an appointment?” Boomed a voice from somewhere nearby. I was afraid, but it would do no good to run away now.
“No.” I replied slowly, sitting down on a stool near the blazing fireplace. I nearly fell off my seat in surprise, when without warning an old man glimmered into sight. He had appeared in the armchair opposite me, holding aloft a chipped teacup and stroking his curly white beard.
“Nice Party trick.” I remarked, trying not to appear scared. The old man took a noisy slurp out of his cup.
“Did you not read the sign, you malevolent wretch! Here I am trying to enjoy a cup of cocoa and you barge in uninvited.” I didn’t know how to respond, I was afraid he would turn me into a newt if I spoke.
“Well, you repugnant worm what do you have to say for yourself?” I cleared my throat.
“I’m sorry, but I needed your help.”
The ill-tempered man spluttered into his cocoa and bellowed.
“I’m not here to do anyone favours, you poorly-clothed urchin. Now be gone!”
If he thought I was going to leave after he had called me, “poorly-clothed’, he was sadly mistaken. I quickly stood up.
“Listen to me, you cranky old creep! The only reason I’m here is because of this locket,” I lifted it out from under my blazer. ”All I want to know is if you can help me get home?” The old man looked momentarily stunned at the sight of the locket, but his face soon relaxed into a frown.
“No need to be rude. Now sit down you insolent little rat.” I did as he said, ignoring the insult. Sending his teacup flying onto the mantelpiece with a flick of his finger, he asked.
“Where did you steal that locket from then?”
“I didn’t, it belonged to my mother.” I answered gritting my teeth, trying to keep my patience. He let out a hollow laugh.
“And who might she be?”
“She was, Annabelle Fox.”
“Annabelle…” he stuttered under his breath, staring at me. I was getting fed up of this grumpy old wizard.
“Look, if your not going to help me, I’ll just go.” I said getting up.
“Impatient, aren’t you? Now concentrate on the teacup.” I looked at him apprehensively.
“Why?”
“Just do it!” He yelled at me impatiently. Crossing my arms I glared at the teacup. I didn’t know why I was even listening to him. I continued glaring at the cup upon the mantelpiece. I was just thinking about how pointless this all was when the cup wobbled slightly and toppled off the mantel.
“As I thought, hidden powers” declared the elderly man triumphantly, clapping his hands together.
“What do you mean?” I asked him puzzled. Was he talking about the teacup? That couldn’t have been me; it was probably just an uneven surface.
“No time to explain, you will come tomorrow morning at eleven. Now get out I have another student due!” And without so much as another word he ushered me out the building, slamming the door shut behind me.

I had a lot to think about as I walked back to the palace. Firstly what did that old man know about the locket? Why was he suddenly so interested when I mentioned my mother? And most intriguing of all, why was he so weird?
I made it back just as it was coming up for evening, and as I strolled up to the entrance I noticed a lot of activity. Servants were lighting torches along the pathway, trimming trees and as I said hello to the guards I noticed they were all wearing new uniforms.
I passed through the great hall unnoticed in all the last minute preparations, and managed to retrace my steps to find our rooms. I walked through the door to see Gina arranging her hair into an elaborate up do by the mirror, whereas Caitlyn was sitting cross legged by the window looking deep in thought.
“Cait?” I asked my pensive friend as I sat down beside her. Caitlyn jumped as if awakening from a daydream.
“Hey Tabbie. Have you seen the dresses yet?”
“No, I just got back. Why?” I asked, taking off my boots. Caitlyn beamed.
“You had better follow me.” She skipped into the adjoining room on our right, and pointed to the bed. Lain out were three ball gowns. Firstly there was a strapless baby pink dress, with silken rosebuds sewn onto the bodice, the long skirt raised at the front so layers of with white tulle were visible.
The second gown was royal blue with gold embroidery and silky golden ribbon laced up the back. Lastly, and in my view, the most beautiful of all the gowns. Was a long-sleeved ball gown, emerald in colour, its narrow, floaty skirt trimmed with silver leaves.
“Gina wants the pink one, and is it ok I get the blue dress? Green clashes with my hair. “The dresses were exquisite, but I had one little concern.
“That’s fine with me, but I can’t really wear my boots with a ball gown.” Cait clapped her hands and exclaimed.
“Ah don’t worry that’s all covered, open the chest.” I turned my attention to a mahogany chest at the foot of the bed, and flipped the latch. Opening the lid, to see hundreds of shoes.
“Please tell me I’m not hallucinating. Where did these come from?”
“No idea, Ceran’s sister came by earlier and dropped them off.” The Prince had a sister? I must have missed a lot that afternoon.
“These are a bit big, but they look cool with my outfit,” Caitlyn said lifting up a pair of high-fronted golden slippers and grabbing up the blue dress. “I’m going to get ready, Laters!”
“Laters.” I mumbled back, as my head was buried in the chest examining the treasure trove of footwear. After a while I decided upon a pair of backless, round-toed silver mules, covered in crystal beads. They weren’t my usual style, though I thought they complimented my dress better than cherry red-cowboy boots. Gina came through the door, adjusting a feathered headpiece attached to her hair.
“Hey Tabs, can I have this room?” I nodded, trying not to laugh at the flamingo that seemed to be protruding from her head.
“Yeah, fine. By the way, where did that feathery thing come from?”
“Oh Belina leant it to me, do you like it?” she smiled holding the pink dress up to her body and spinning around.
“Is Belina, Ceran’s sister by any chance?” I assumed it had to be.
“Yeah, she’s great. Did Cait mention her?”
“Briefly.” I answered, taking my gown and shoes next door.
I threw the garment and silver mules unceremoniously on my bed, and slung my jacket down beside them. I wondered what time it was back home, it could have been days, months or even years since we left. What would my Gran do when no-one answered the phone, day after day? Both Gina and Caitlyn’s families would have no idea what had happened to us. Though, my two friends were happily preparing for a ball. I picked up a shoe and flung it across the room, hitting a table with a loud bang. I couldn’t forget it was my fault we were trapped here in the first place, and I didn’t think I could happily flit around a ballroom, making small-talk and drinking punch. I was about to make my getaway, when Caitlyn knocked and entered.
“Not getting ready?” She asked seeing I had put my boots back on.
“I’m not going.” I said bluntly. Caitlyn sat down on the bed and noticed the shoe lying on the ground.
“There must be something up, if you of all people are throwing shoes around.” I moved back from the door slightly.
“It’s…just, all my fault,” tears had started to form in my eyes. “All I can think about is what happens if we can’t get back.” Caitlyn nodded gently, and gave me a half-smile.
“Don’t think that thought hasn’t crossed my mind as well,” Pausing she added. “I know we’ll figure it all out… And on the plus side, we’re staying in a Palace. Now put on your glad rags Cinders. We’re going to the ball!”

Chapter Five : Part One

Chapter Five

Looking around I tried to take it all in, everything was spinning as my mind buzzed with excitement. I had never before dreamt that I would ride into a city in another world, it was so wonderfully surreal. Around me there were ornate buildings, towering knot covered trees, dusty coloured dogs and people. The People of Ellivor were by physical appearance, the same as you and me. However their clothing seemed to be an odd mish mash of Edwardian and Victorian styles. Most females stopped and giggled excitedly pointing at the prince, then turned their attention toward me and my friends, looking exceptionally out of place in our high-street bought garb. Men In feather plumed top hats mumbled to each other as our party galloped past, whilst children gathered at the the side of the road waving with enthusiasm.

I was certain Gina was having a field day her eyes wide in astonishment, taking in the richly coulored styles of Seilverna, Caitlyn also seemed to be awestruck by the royal city. I couldn’t help by smile, this was probably the strangest yet remarkable thing that had ever happened to me, my main concern was of course getting home, though at the time the sights and smells of Seilverna were all that filled my giddy head. We rode past bakers shops, their windows filled with star-shaped bread and pastry spirals, outfitters with emerald velvet jackets, extravagant headwear (and on display in ‘Medella’s boutique’ a rather fetching pair of lace up boots, encrusted with rainbow coloured stones) . Though what greatest caught my interest was a rather small shabby sign hanging above an narrow alleyway, that read in gold curving, lettering,

‘ Eidan Queffier - Qualified instructor of sorcery. By appointment only ‘

A sorceror would perhaps know something about a magical locket I thought it might be a wise idea to return later after breakfast. It probably took ver an hour to reach the palace, however it seemed to quickly to me, after all the perplexing new sights I had encountered in the city.
Though as we approached the gates and the place loomed up in front of us, I realised this was the most beautiful place in the entire city, and certainly I had ever seen. The palace was even more astounding up close than it was from the hillside. Small waterfalls trickled down columns and pillars that lead up to the entrance, past ivy-smothered trees and carved stone benches. At the end of the captivating pathway lay a vast wooden door inset with a golden pattern of swirls, with guards flanking either side of the wide steps which led up to it.

As we approached, the guards lifted their hands into a salute. We rode past them and past the of the entraceway, under a high archway and into stables.
A large group of boys sitting on the ground, who appeared to be playing some sort of card game, sprung to attention and immediately rushed forward to take the reins of the horses from us.
“Your highness, Lord Stables”, spoke the oldest looking boy, bowing to them both quickly. He turned to face Gina, Caitlyn and me. “Err…Ladies”. The boy stuttered confused. It was perhaps the fact we were all wearing trousers that had thrown him, every female I had seen in city , were wearing dresses.
We looked at each other grinning, and followed behind The prince and Stables, back in the direction of the entrance doors.
Ascending the stairs, I could feel every gaze locked on us, the three girls who to them looked extremely odd in jeans. The doors opened before us and we walked into a high entrance hall, a large archway in front of us, which lead into an immense hall, around five times bigger than my school’s assembly hall. Every inch of wallspace was covered in sumptuous silky fabric of various colours, glittering gold and silver stars hung from the countless chandeliers dotted around the space and the floor twinkled like it was covered in glitter.
“This must be for the ball, Ceran mentioned.” whispered Gina breathlessly to me and Caitlyn.
“Well I doubt this is where they have breakfast.” I replied equally awestruck.

The Prince and his companion continued to the end of the massive hall and proceeded up an majestic marble staircase. At the top of the staircase was another long corridor lit with blue couloured candles.
“After you.” gestured Lord Stables, opening the fifth door on his left.
Ignoring him, I followed my friends through the door and into a light filled room, expansive oval windows offering a scenic view of Seilverna.
A long wooden table positioned by the windows, was laden with fruit, breads, pastries and an assortment of other foods.

Chapter Four: Part Three

This place was like something out of a incredible dream, well apart from Stables who was more of a nightmare. I cast my memory back to my hallway, and the words we had chanted, placing my hand on my neck, I felt the locket and turned it over. I read through the words in my head until I found the line I was looking for.

“To Ellivor you will go”

So this peculiar land was called ‘Ellivor’, though its connection with my mother was still a mystery to me, one I intended to solve. I cantered downhill, far behind everyone else, apart from Lord Stables who I assumed was still keeping an eye on me. The beautiful city which lay at the bottom of the steep forest path, was both astounding and entrancing. I estimated it was only a short while before we arrived. I felt excited, but nervous and I began to wonder how many people from Earth had ever visited this world, were me and my friends the only ones?
I could just about make out Caitlyn and Gina’s heads bobbing far in front of me, Were they thinking something similar? I kind of doubted this, Knowing Caitylyn, she was probably wondering if she could pick-up any new recipes here. Whilst Gina was considering how good the shopping would be in the city.

The time passed rapidly , and after half an hour we were nearing the city gates. I arrived at the bottom of the steep forest track and saw my two friends and everyone else, sitting down by a narrow river, their horse tethered to nearby trees. I rode over and managed to dismount without falling on my face.

“Tabbie…“
Caitlyn said slowly, then paused,

“You were riding a horse…and your still alive!”

She finished , sharing a look of disbelief with Gina. I smiled and answered,

“Yep, no thanks to some people.”

Briefly shooting Stables a meaningful look, whilst I finished tying up my horse next to the river, so it could quench its thirst with the other steeds.

“So were letting the horses rest for a bit, before heading for the city?”

I asked Gina, sitting down next to river’s edge.

“Yeah, Ceran said they needed to unwind after that long ride.”

I nodded , leaning down to splaash my face with the cold water.

“Maybe they should try Yoga?”

Caitlyn suggested, whilst me and Gina erupted into laughter.

“Cait, that was lamest joke!”

Gina managed to say through her laughter. Caitlyn raised her eyebrow and retorted quizzically,

“Maybe I wasn’t joking?”

We all started laughing again, Caitlyn’s Jokes were indeed rubbish at the best of times, yet I couldn’t help thinking how nice it was to laugh together, after everything weird that had happened earlier on.

Finally we all recovered , and the strange little book drifted into my mind.

“I nearly forgot to show you this.”

I exclaimed, brandishing the book , when I got it out of my deep pocket.

“Hey, the weird animal book!”

Caitlyn shouted out, excited. Gina smiled and asked,

“Do you think it will help get us home?”

I shrugged,

“At the moment, I really don’t know, but I’m going to search every single page for a solution.”

They both had a sorrowful look in their eyes, and I figured they must be thinking what would happen if there was no solution to get home. I wasn’t going to let that happen. I was about to reassure them of this, when the prince approached.

“Sorry to interrupt Ladies, however we must leave now if we are to return in time for breakfast.”

Me and Caitlyn swapped looks of delight and sped to our horses as fast as we could. Gina approached soon afterwards and sighed,

“You two, are so embarrassing sometimes”

I was so happy at the thought of being fed, I gave a wide grin and replied,

“Well, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

And so I galloped off ahead on my mount, Caitlyn not far behind me.

*

It was a mere ten minutes before we all reached the entrance to the city, Gina was still highly embarrassed at me and Caitlyn’s behaviour in front of her beloved Prince. However Ceran didn’t seem concerned and was riding at the front of the party with Lord Stables, laughing and joking. We rode past tall ornate pillars, made of the light coloured stone the city was primarily constructed from and into a tree lined avenue.

Prince Ceran halted and turned his horse round to face us and announced proudly,

“Welcome, to the Royal City of Seilverna.”

Chapter Four: Part Two

Even though I was equally startled and terrified as the horse galloped onwards down the path, suddenly a little voice in the back of my mind whispered,

“ Pull yourself together Tabbie! Your not in Cornwall, that horse is not called Merlin, grab the reins and take control! Do you really want that loathsome Lord to get the better of you!”

That voice was right! Why was I so afraid of this horse? I just had to get over my fear and take control! I felt my fingers flex and let go of the horses neck and gripping hold of the reins again, pulling the horse to an abrupt stop.

I patted the horses head and let out a sigh of relief. I heard the clip-clop of hooves from behind me and saw Lord Stables ride up, looking slightly breathless. He dismounted and walked over to me , his face regaining its usual self-assured smile.

“Oh I see you are unhurt, I thought I may have to come to your rescue, again”

I rolled my eyes in a Gina-esque manner, amd searched my mind for a ingenious and witty comeback. I admit at the time I couldn’t think of any so I simply replied,

“Whatever!”

And so I urged my horse into a galllop, its hooves kicking up dust in stable’s direction as I rode away into the distance. I felt newly confident as the wind whipped my hair into my eyes. Horse riding wasn’t so bad, to me it felt liberating, now I had the cowboy attitude to match the boots and it felt fantastic. I only wished I could have a look at the book though, It was kind of difficult however on a bumpy forest track, even with my new found riding poise.

“You know, I’m starting to think that you dislike my company?”

Lord Stables had caught up with me, that really put a damper on things. Slowing to a canter I cynically gasped back my eyes wide with mock surprise,

“Wow, I didn’t realise it was that obvious?”

Stables merely laughed and shook his head, making his dark hair bob gently from side to side.

“May I ask you a question?”

He continued, looking me in the eye.

“If you have to”

I replied in a bored voice, candidly yawning .

The lord ignored my less than polite reply,

“Are you always so forthright with your feelings?”

I stopped fake-yawning and actually considered the question for a moment. I suppose I was quite frank with my opinions, like the time when Sebastian Carter asked me to the joint-schools end of year dance, and I told him I would rather kiss a boil-covered Hippos butt, than go with him anywhere, (Well to be honest he did deserve it, he was kinda hot, but he really was a stuck up bully).

“Only when they need to be made clear.”

I answered firmly after a while, feeling his stare on me, which made me slightly uncomfortable.

“Interesting”

I heard him whisper, slightly smiling, before he rode off in front of me.

“Good Riddance!”

I thought aloud. I bet his Little smiles and searching eyes made other girls swoon and give a longing sigh, but the only feeling I had about him was the urge to kick him quick and swift with my boots. I was reliving that satisfying kick again in my head (complete with slow-motion), when I rode over a hill and saw the most breathtaking sight.
Down the steep hill lay a large town comprised of magnificent stone buildings scattered everywhere , many glistening lakes and most awe-inspiring of all was the palace, which stood tall and proud and the end of a straight road running through the city. It was made of the same light-stone which the city consisted of, though was vastly more intricate, with numerous arches, turrets and diamond- bright windows shimmering in the morning-sunlight.

Chapter Four: Part One

Chapter Four

The horses cantered through the forest until they reached a wide leaf- strewn pathway. The Prince halted and waited for everyone else to reach the path, well actually the only person he was waiting for, was yours truly. I was clinging onto my mounts reins, for dear life, reliving my last fiasco with a horse.

The reason I was so utterly petrified of horses was Merlin. No, I don’t mean the mythical wizard of King Arthurs court, I mean a bad-tempered Black Forest Pony. It was the Easter holidays and I was planning to spend it doing
nothing at all strenuous, perhaps the odd dose of retail therapy, although otherwise I would be mostly having lie-ins and watching ‘Bewitched’ reruns. My Grandmother had other ideas, so instead of the stress-free week I craved, she booked an outdoor-adventure holiday in Cornwall, with the only plus point being Gina and Caitlyn were coming along too. So reluctantly I helped Gran pack up the Volkswagen with (hideous) rain-jackets and hiking boots and we were on the road. The whole journey was basically Cait and Gina making off-colour remarks about my Pumpkin orange rain poncho with matching detachable hood. I felt I had to wear it, even though it was probably the most atrocious item of clothing I’d ever laid eyes on (and been blinded by) as my grandmother had bought it for me and I didn’t want to offend her after she was so excited about the holiday.

When we finally reached ‘Fair-weather Heights’, The rain was falling in a never -ending downpour, and I was thinking maybe the owners should have changed the centres name to something more apt. Anyway in my opinion the whole holiday was as bad as the weather, I had spent nearly the whole time shivering outside, wearing awful clothes and thinking even school was better than this. It was my last day at ‘Fair-weather’ and I was slightly happier as the prospect of leaving was spurring me on, also the fact that the Hunky young instructor, Peter, would be leading the riding expedition was something to look forward to. I thought it was my lucky day when my Gran announced she would be going into the nearest town, Bude, for a traditional Cornish cream tea, instead of joining us for riding that afternoon, which meant I didn’t have to feel guilty for leaving my nightmare-inducing poncho in my room. Gina leant me one of her exclusive ‘Paul Smith’ designer waterproof jackets and I almost felt excited about that afternoon. We were all lined up at the paddock waiting to set off, and Peter had started chatting to me about a hot new band, he heard was giving a preformace that night in town.
“Yeah I heard their great live”
I replied cooly, as he leaned casually against the wooden fence next to me.
“Fancy checking it out later”
He asked me smiling, before he disappeared into the stables.
“Yeah I suppose I’m not doing anyth…”
I stopped talking as he lead out a Black horse rearing its hooves in the air.
“Cool I’ll meet you about eightish’”
He then noticed my nervous expression and eyes wide in terror,
“Something wrong with Merlin?”
I felt like making an excuse and running back to my room to hide, this horse looked enormous and angry, im sure it hazel eyes were glaring at me.
“Um nope, im just fine, eightish it is!”
I was so afraid I thought I needed the toilet, but I wasn’t going to blow my chances with a cute guy, over the Black Beauty’s twisted cousin here!
Peter helped me climb on and we began the cliff-trail. Unlike everyone else’s horse Merlin was twisting about all over the place.
“Good Horsey”
I whispered trembling, into Merlin’s ear and patting him on the neck,
Whilst clutching onto the reins telling myself I was in control. However suddenly he let out a loud whinny and galloped off the trail towards the cliff edge. We reached the crumbling rim, and he started bucking up and down, trying to dislodge me from his saddle.
“Help! This horse is a blinking pyscho!”
I managed to shriek, clutching onto the enraged beast’s neck.
I stupidly looked down and saw foam tipped waves crashing angrily against the shore on the beach far below me.
“Please its trying to kill me!”
I began to yelp helplessly, feeling like a right dope.
My fingers began to lose their grip, when I was abruptly lifted from the horse by a pair of strong arms and placed on the grass. I looked up to see my saviour was Peter.
“Whoa that was close, that thing is crazy!”
To my surprise instead of asking if I was hurt or something along those lines, Peter merely scowled down at me.
“Why did you scare Merlin like that! You could have got him killed with your stupid behaviour!”
I was speechless, I mean a mentally unstable horse had nearly thrown me headfirst off a steep cliff-face and all this guy could say was it was my fault, I wouldn’t have wanted the horse to get hurt or anything, but I couldn’t believe this guy. I dusted myself off and responded indignantly,

“Well thankfully ,the horse seems to be ok not hanks to me, I think you would be better off taking Merlin to that gig! Since you love it so much!”

And so I stomped back down the trail to pack my bags.

I had finally reached The path and everyone was staring at me bemused. I was taking it as slowly as possible, this horse seemed nice, though I wasn’t taking any chances.

“What took you so long?”

Caitlyn asked smiling at me as my horse sloped onto the path.

“I just like to um, take in the sights, why don’t you all ride ahead I will be just behind you”
I replied breezily.

“I will ride with her”
Lord Stables announced resolutely guiding his horse over to me,

“Its not safe for her to ride alone, the spies might still be here in the forest”

The prince nodded his agreement as he and the others galloped on ahead down the path.

“seeya later Tabbie!”

Gina called out behind her ,as she disappeared behind a clump of Fir trees.

So then is was just me and my good friend (yeah right!) Lord Stables left.

Giving me a devilish grin, he turned in my direction

“Shall we?”

He asked, gesturing ahead. And with that gave my horse’s behind a firm slap, sending me galloping ahead, screaming my head off .

“I think we are even now!”

I heard the wily Lord call out laughing behind me.

Chapter Three: Part Three

Gina gave us a coy smile and shook her head slowly.

“Hey! I’m just being friendly, anyway Tabs what the deal with you and that Girvan guy, you looked pretty cosy back there?”

I felt my face going the same colour as my Cowboy boots, though I knew I couldn’t stop it. Caitlyn giggled and asked,

“Yeah whats the deal Tabbie?”

Oh flip! Now Caitlyn had forgotten all about taunting Gina and the two of them were questioning me about that Stables jerk, this was really not what I needed.

“Will the two of you shut it! Firstly, we need to concentrate on getting home and secondly there is no deal with me and that idiot!”

I think I said the second part a bit loudly, because Prince Ceran turned his head around to see what the fuss was about. I smiled awkwardly at him blushing furiously for the second time in two minutes ,whereas Caitlyn and Gina were roaring with laughter. Ceran looking perplexed went back to talking with His friend.

“I wouldn’t mind there being a deal between us!”

Caitlyn sniggered, nudging me. Gina nodded and added,

“ Tabs, he’s Smokin’ you have to admit it!”

I groaned putting a hand to my head dramatically.

“He’s nothing special”

I answered them casually, (I was obviously lying, I had to admit as much as I despised Lord Stables, he had one heavenly physique!).

“Ok tabbie we’ll lay off, you don’t like him.”

Caitlyn murmured, slowly, winking (not so) slyly at Gina over my shoulder. I ignored their exchange and carried on walking. Man I was hungry, I figured I might find a packet of old chewing gum in my blazer pocket if I was lucky.

Placing my hands in the deep pockets, I couldn’t find gum, although I found something better (sadly it wasent edible), It was my Mother’s book!

I was about to take it out to have a better look, when the Prince’s voice called out from ahead,

“Please pick a steed, Ladies”

Gina’s face was alight with glee. She absolutely adored horses, me on the other hand, I was more of a four wheels kinda’ girl after the last time I came into contact with a horse.

“Caity, Tabs! Dosent she look exactly like Peppermint!”

Gina squealed at us, pointing at a mare, the colour of toffee popcorn.(Peppermint and Blossom were her two horses, she rode back in California, she had shown me and Caitlyn the pictures often enough.)

Caitlyn gave me a pained expression, and I weakly smiled back. I really didn’t want to go near a horse.

Caitlyn walked over to a chestnut coloured stallion and hopped on without much assistance, even she had taken a few riding lessons a few years back.

So with Caitlyn was sitting astride her chosen trasnsport, and Gina mounting Peppermints Twin, I was left standing there awkward and nervously staring at the nearest horse.

“Are you feeling well?”

Asked Prince Goldielocks from atop his silver stallion. I stared down nervously at my feet , and mumbled,

“Err…I can’t really…well…ride”

“I am certain Lord Girvan would permit you to travel with him, if you are an unsure rider?”

“Of course”

Lord Stables standing by his horse replied, he then offered his hand out in assistance.

There was no way I was getting on a horse with Stables!

“Thanks but no thanks!”

I managed, verging on polite.

I turned away from Him and went over to the nearest free animal, I attempted to mount the horse, the same way as Gina And Caitlyn though it really wasn’t as easy as they had made it look. I could feel everyones eyes on me struggling to get on the mare, but I wasn’t going to give up easily.

“Do you need me to assist you?”

Came The lords amused voice from behind me.

“Fine thanks”

I semi-snapped in return. After another twenty-two tries I was positioned unsteadly atop the horse, clutching on to the reins tightly. The prince gave me a last uncertain glance before calling out,

“Onwards to the palace”

Chapter Three: Part Two

I raised my eyebrow at him and smirked nastily (Oh yeah I had the moves!) before marching past him to join my friends. Caitlyn ran over to me and
Shouted ,
“Tabbie you idiot! What were you doing getting those hairy dudes to chase after you, we thought you were mincemeat!”

She was slapping me on the arm as she said each word, which was kind of painful, after my fall and being slammed up against a tree and all.
Gina rushed over from Blondie’s side and joined in the rant.

“Tabs don’t even think about doing that again, your not exactly ‘The karate kid’, I mean you ever had like two lessons!”

Ah I may have only had two lessons, but I had watched every season of Charmed, everything I know is from watching Piper and co, kicking some demon behinds!

Massaging my inflamed red arm, I replied

“Oh come on! I’m unhurt aren’t I? can we get out of the enchanted flippin’ forest and get something to eat!”

Gina rolled her eyes at me, though Caitlyn agreed,
“Yeah G, I’m so hungry I could eat a…well anything!”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at Caitlyn rubbing her stomach in an overdramatic manner, letting out loud anguished groans.

“Fine” , sighed Gina, “You two are always thinking about food, lets vamoose!”

Lord Girvans companion approached us and gave a bow.

“Ladies, I feel it is my duty to make sure you leave the forest safely, and I hope you can accept Lord Stables apology …Tabbie isn’t it?, after the way he treated you”

Lord Girvan looked taken aback, then smiled and spoke his voice heavy with sarcasm

“Yes, please accept my humblest apologies dear lady, at causing you any distress, though please take into consideration it is my duty to protect the land from enemy spies.”

Inspecting my star pattered nails, I tried to look as if I was seriously considering his obviously forced apology

“Hmm yeah ok, apology accepted” I said giving a yawn.

The fair-haired gentleman gave Stables an annoyed glance and shook his head and turned back to face me and my friends.

“I would also be honoured if you would attend the midsummer ball this evening as royal guests”

I noticed as he said this he was staring openly at Gina. Interesting.

Before I could say “Thanks for the invite, but were kind of busy trying to get back to our own world at the moment” Caitlyn said,

“Royal Guests? We don’t know any royalty, so maybe you should ask them first before you invite us.”

Blondies mouth curled into a smile,

“Well Since I was bestowed the title of Prince, I think you attending the ball will be acceptable”

“Ooh” cooed Gina, “So that’s why you have all the guys on horses with you! Cool!”

“Guys on Horses?” I asked her puzzled

“Yeah their all back down the path, we bumped into them when we came back to look for you, before we could explain what was going on, we heard your voice and found you here.”

Oh man, this was getting surreal, first the whole magic locket thing, the beardies, Lord ‘smirky’ Stables and now Royalty, I needed a lie down (and a big hamburger!)

“Now we should be heading back to the city” announced Prince Goldilocks to Lord Stables,
“Come along ladies” he smiled, before turning round to walk back in the direction I had first found my friends held captive.

Caitlyn and myself followed quickly behind, whilst Gina quickened her step to catch up with the prince and Girvan.

“Your highness” she said purred, pushing back her blonde mane from her face coquettishly.

The prince turned to Gina, slightly blushing,

“Yes err…My lady”

Gina gave him one of her dazzling smiles, the kind that made the David Stewarts boys queue up to date her.
“I was wondering what your name is? it feels so formal calling you ‘Your highness’”

Me and Caitlyn were now desperately trying to not giggle behind them.

The prince ran his fingers through his thick hair

“You may call me Prince Ceran or eh..Ceran if you wish.”

“ Ceran! cool name, I’m Gina Freeman, you can call me G!”

And with that she gave him a little wink and went to back to join us.

“You can call me G!”
I mimicked high-pitched quietly as she stopped beside me, whilst Caitlyn made retching noises.

Part Three coming soon…

Chapter Three: Part One (Part Two tomorrow!)

Chapter Three

“Let me introduce myself…”
F.A said , as he pulled me up from the forest floor.
“Lord Girvan Stables, and whom may I ask are you?”
I looked into those glinting eyes of his and quickly looked away embarrassed, snatching my hands away from his as I regained my balance.
“Lord Stables eh? how…equestrian !”
I remarked glaring at him, dusting dirt off my sore backside.

I was really starting to dislike this Lord Stables dude, first he was hassling me, then he was the all-action hero. Ok so maybe he had saved me from Erlin and Marblin, though I’m sure I could have unleashed some karate moves on them if he hadn’t barged in, like some aristocratic Robin Hood! However it then struck me that he was a Lord, which meant maybe the incident that had ended our first meeting, might mean he was going to have me hung, drawn and quartered. Maybe I had better play nice.

“Well? You do have a name don’t you?”
His mocking voice cut short my thoughts, and I realised that being nice to him was not an option, he reminded me of all those posh, irritating guys from ‘David Stewarts’ the boys school that sometimes mixed with St. Mary’s, (though he was incredibly better looking)

Giving him a smirk I replied,
“Sorry ’Lord’ Stables, I don’t usually give strange men my name!”
His mouth twisted into a similar smirk and he leaned closer to me and spoke softly.
“Call me Girvan, and will you not make an exception just this once?”
Quick as a flash he spun me round grabbing my hands and pushed me up against the nearest tree.
“Oof“ I groaned,” what was that for!”
“I haven’t forgotten what happened last time, you may not be a spy, but I don’t trust you”
Lord Stables whispered into my ear, as I struggled madly against his strong grip.

“If you think this is going to make me tell you anything you badger-sniffling oaf, forget it!”
He gave a small laugh,
“That was probably the most original insult I’ve heard in a while.”
He turned me round to face him, his face a few inches away from mine, he spoke again this time in a gentle tone.
“I don’t wish to hurt you, but I must insist you tell me who you are at once.”

His facial expression had softened and his voice sounded almost pleading, it made me wonder even more about the ‘spy’ thing, what exactly was going on in this place?
I gazed up at him, maybe I had better tell him before he got out his crossbow again.

“Fine! My name is…”

“TABBIE!”

Hey! wait a second! That was Caitlyn’s voice!

“What on earth are you doing!”

An unfamiliar male voice boomed out, after Caitlyn had spoken. Lord Stables turned round, still holding on to me, much to my displeasure. I looked past him and saw a tall man, of around his age, with golden blonde hair and a dimpled chin, looking at us with a mixture of disbelief and amusement. I noticed Gina standing next to him raising an eyebrow at me, a broad smile across her face.

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”

She said, trying unsuccessfully to stifle a laugh. I began to blush, however Lord Stables just smiled casually at Caitlyn and Gina.

“Friends of yours?”

He asked, letting me go and gesturing to them.
“Yep!”
I snapped, crossing my arms at him. He sighed and spoke to the blonde guy,
“I assume your female company are familiar with ‘Tabbie’ here?”

He spoke my name as if he were telling a joke (Which was a cheek, coming from a guy called Girvan!)

“Indeed they are Girv, I strongly doubt she poses any threat”

Giving me a knowing smile, Lord stables answered,

“You never can be to careful”

Chapter Two: Adventures in Ellivor

Chapter Two

I slowly opened my eyes, one by one, hoping what had happened in the hallway was just a dream and I was just dozing in the taxi on its way into town. Instead what greeted my eyes was a vast, dark canopy of leaves overhead, with a bright blue sky scarcely visible underneath the foliage.
“Whoa now!”
I mouthed, I could scarcely believe what I saw. I had to find my friends. Caitlyn and Gina had also said the lockets verse, that meant they had to be around here somewhere.
I started to lift up my head for a better look of my forest surrounding, when suddenly I was grabbed from behind. My arms were swiftly bound tightly together. My first intention was to scream as loudly as possible though this plan failed , when before I could open my mouth a smooth, deep voice whispered in my ear.

“Now don’t start screaming, I just want to ask you a few questions”

The calm way in which the mysterious man spoke (I assumed it was a man, I’d never met a woman with a voice that husky) , made me forget for a few moments he had tied me up and was trying to interrogate me. However the loud rumbling of my stomach brought me back down to earth, why couldn’t ‘Tabbies adventures in Wonderland’ have happened after dinner?. Some birthday this was turning out to be. My situation and hunger was making me irritable , who did this guy think he was? This little escapade was growing thin.

Drawing up all my courage, I said

“A few questions eh? I bet this is the only way you can meet girls, by ambushing them in wooded areas!”
his stunned silence made me continue my rant,
“I bet you have, like… two yellow teeth, a wart covered nose and a hunchback”
I finished laughing triumphantly, trying to assure myself I wasn’t afraid. I was still chuckling when I was spun around as quick as lightning to come face to face with the wart-nosed hunchback.

However Mr. Forest-Ambusher was probably the furthest thing from ugly, dare I say it. If Gina had been present I think she would have used the phrase
“Smokin‘ hot” , and if I didn’t despise him so much I would probably have agreed with her.
F.A’s hair was a few shades darker than mine and he wore it so it was just curling at his jaw line. He looked no older than eighteen and was a good few inches taller (Even with the added height of my boots).
“I can assure you, I don’t usually meet many ladies in the forest”
a mocking smile danced across his mouth as he answered, examining me with his shrewd green eyes.

I’m sure his little charm act usually worked a treat, but I didn’t have time to play games, I had to find Cait and Gina.
“I’m sorry”
I said fluttering my eyelashes in my best imitation of wide-eyed innocence.
F.A’s grin morphed into a look of concern,
“About what exactly?”

I looked down at my feet sadly then quickly flashed my eyes up again ,this time filled with determination
“This!”
And with deadly precision I delivered a swift kick to where I could inflict the most short term pain… (well I think you can guess where that is without much help!)

“And that’s for getting my boots muddy!”
I called back over my shoulder, running up the steep tree-strewn slope.

I ran up the hill as fast as my legs would carry me, as I was sure when F.A recovered, he wouldn’t be happy. Finally I reached the top of the peak , I stopped to catch my breath and take in the surroundings. On the other side of the hill in front of me I saw a large waterfall, glistening turquoise in the sunlight which streamed through the clearing. In the distance beyond the waterfall and an expanse of trees, there appeared to be some sort of town, once I found Gina and Caitlyn, that would probably be the wisest place to head.

I carefully slid down the steep hill and walked over to the river, the waterfall splashing cool water onto my tired face. Taking off my boots I sat cross legged by the bank moving my hand through the clear water. I was hungry, tired and fed-up, how was I actually going to find my friends?. They might not even be in this world, let alone this forest!
My stomach let off another angry rumble, as if it was saying “Why are you doing this to me Tabbie? Feed me!”
Patting my stomach sadly, I sighed
“Stupid locket…wish I’d never set eyes o…”
Wait a minute, that was it.! The locket!
Quickly I Put my hand to my neck, it was still there! Maybe if I read the back again , I could see if it would take me home, then I could come back for Gina and Caitlyn and be back in time for dinner!
Perfect!
I clearly spoke the lockets verse, but this time nothing happened.
Hmm ok, so maybe I wouldn’t be back by dinner…

Lying down on the grass, I felt alone and defeated. All I had ,was as Gina called it, ‘the locket of mystery’ and my boots. And neither of these were edible. After what seemed like hours lying there miserable, I heard something.
At first I thought it was some sort of wild bird squawking, but then I realised the high pitched squeal was familiar.
It was Gina!

Shoving on my boots I ran in the direction the sound was coming from. After a few minutes of running blindly through the trees, I heard voices nearby. Crouching down behind a clump of bushes with some odd heart- shaped purple berries growing on them, and lay in wait. I didn’t have to wait long, a few minutes later I saw my two friends approaching, though to my surprise they were not alone. Their wrists were bound together and they were being pulled along roughly by two unkempt ,Grizzly Adams wannabes.
“You are so ruining my look with these tacky rope-cuffs”
Whined Gina gesturing to her wrists. I smiled to myself trying to restrain a laugh, trust G to complain about fashion, when she was being held captive.
“What did I say earlier about talking girl!”
Growled beardy number one, a nasty looking character with a vicious scar visible on his right cheek.
Gina rolled her eyes and retorted
“I don’t know? I was a kinda’ distracted by your unsightly facial fuzz”
Whilst the grizzly duo looked utterly baffled by her reply, Caitlyn erupted into laughter,
“Amen to that sister!”
She giggled winking at Gina.
Hairy number two looking furious (I suspect he was more annoyed at not understanding what they were talking about rather than the insults themselves) roared at them,
“Quieten down both of you! you will only speak when you are presented to the master later”
After that ,Caitlyn and Gina went quiet their eyes filled with fear, comprehending the perilous situation they had found themselves in.

The whiskers brothers turned their backs and continued dragging their prisoners along the uneven forest track. Now was the time to act.
Cautiously I lifted my head out of my hiding place and tried subtlety, to grab my captured companions attention.
Ok , by ‘subtlety’ I mean placing my boots on top of my hands like glove puppets and waving them around wildly. A few seconds later, Gina and Caitlyn spotted me (well…how couldn’t they?) and Cait shot me her best, ‘What-the-heck-are-you-doing-waving-your-boots-around-like-a-crazy-lunatic’ look.

Gina meanwhile cleared her throat, while I ducked down again, and said meekly
“excuse me… err….wise sirs, we want to apologise about our behaviour earlier, and I wonder if we could stop a moment, as I desperately need to relieve myself”
She looked like a little lost puppy, her big blue eyes shining sadly, forming (fake) watery tears.

I had forgotten how good an actress she was. There was many a bad situation Gina had gotten us out of through her acting techniques. Such as the time one Friday afternoon during cross country running, Caitlyn (Whose school has a half day on Fridays) met us behind the janitors shed with a change of clothes and we escaped through the gap in the fence, to attend Edinburgh fashion week .
We thought we had got away with it , until Gina had to sneak back into the boarders hall and got caught halfway in the kitchen window, dangling above a sink, worried about getting her Christian Dior wedges wet.
On Monday we were sent to the assistant head’s office for questioning, under the pressure my mouth grew dry and I couldn’t remember our false alibi When I had lost all hope of escaping a months detention, then Gina suddenly buried her head in her hands and let out a loud sob.
“Miss Freeman. Whatever’s the matter?”
Asked Mrs Chan concerned.
Gina removed her hands to reveal her usually flawless face, red and blotchy with tears streaming from her eyes.
“I’m s…s…so sorry, I was just trying to help and now I’ve gotten us both into trouble…!”
Mrs Chan took out a pack of handkerchiefs from her desk drawer and passed them to Gina.
“Now dear, whatever do you mean?
She asked my sobbing friend softly, Gina removed a hanky from the pack and holding it to her petite nose, gave a loud theatrical sniffle.
“Well, Mrs Chan, whilst me and Tabitha were enjoying our afternoon run…”
I nearly choked trying to disguise my laugh as a cough, when Gina called me ‘Tabitha‘, Until I remembered there was a moth long detention at stake here.
Gina however carried on regardless, ignoring my interruption.
“We were running past the sheds when we heard noises from the road behind, we knew it was against school rules, though we thought we should investigate.”
Mrs Chan was now raptly paying attention, as Gina paused for breath,
“Imagine our shock when we saw through the fence an injured Barn owl, hooting in agony”
Hooting in agony? I didn’t think I could keep a straight face for much longer.
“A barn owl?” asked Chan a little disbelievingly.
Luckily Gina’s serious facade never faltered for a second.
“Picture our surprise at seeing the once majestic bird reduced to this state, it was truly heartbreaking , so I sent Tabitha to find a phone box to call for help, whilst I stayed by the owl’s side, eventually the Vets from the ‘r.s.v.b’ turned up and we went with them ”
she finished dabbing her moist eyes.
Mrs Chan stood behind her desk speechless, before managing to ask
“How did you get your change of clothes?”
I jumped in to answer that,
“After we saw Barney… that’s the owl’s name’ I added with a smile,
“…was going to be alright, my Gran picked us up and I lent Gina some clean clothes at my house, before she came back here”
Gina nodded sombrely as I said this.
Mrs Chan walked over to us both and said slowly
“Well, I cant imagine how anyone could conjure up such a…tale, I’m going to give you both a punishment exercise for leaving school property without permission. Though otherwise your free to go.”

Nevertheless, back to the forest where Gina (aka, Gwyneth Paltrow Junior.) was putting on an Oscar worthy performance. The smaller beardy stopped in his tracks and turned to his scarred comrade.
“I suppose we can stop for a few minutes Erlin?, they may be less trouble if we let them rest”
Gina gave him an endearing little smile, and the beardy whom spoke blushed slightly.
“You’re a soft touch Marblin! a pair of pretty blue eyes glance at you, and you’re snared in their trap! However a rest will be good for all of us, we have a long way to travel.” answered whom I assumed to be Erlin.

They led Caitlyn and Gina over to a tree and tied the ropes restraining their hands to a thick branch poking out from the trunk.
“ We kinda need our hands untied, to umm attend to our business…”
Said Caitlyn desperately, doing a little dance, as if she really was desperate for the toilet.
Erlin took out a sharp, twisted blade and cut their ropes.
“Ah thank you!”
Smiled Gina rubbing her red wrists. Caitlyn began to jog over to my hiding place but was pulled back by Erlin, who held up his glinting blade, closely to her face.
“You go one by one, in case you royal spies get any ideas about escaping…”

He let of Caitlyn’s wrist and she ran over to the bush. Gina sighed and crossed her arms.
“There you go with all that royal spies nonsense again! We don’t even know what your talking about!”
Erlin gave a little sneer, polishing his knife on his threadbare coat.
“We’ll see what the master makes of your lies, girl!”

“Tabbie! You don’t know glad I am to see you!” Caitlyn whispered crouching next to me ,“We have to get G outta’ there!”
“ I know!” I said to her, going over our options.
“Any ideas then?” she asked.
I had no idea at all what to do, but then a crazy idea struck me.
Shuffling past Caitlyn I quickly stood up.
“What are you doing!” she whispered to me shocked.
“Wish me luck!” I replied strolling casually out of the bush.

“Another spy!” called out Marblin in shock.
I stopped a few metres away from Erlin and shouted,
“No you Hairy imbeciles, I’m the only spy! And I demand you let these innocent people go!”
“You admit to being a spy?” snarled Erlin, brandishing his knife.

“ Indeed, you smelly, style-redundant twit! Maybe you had better catch me!”
And with that I ran for my life back towards the waterfall, with Erlin and Marblin on my tail.
“Caitlyn! G! Run!” I yelled back to my friends, not daring to look behind me.
Maybe it wasn’t the best plan, id ever thought up but as long as my friends were safe, that was what mattered. I was sure I could outrun a couple of knife wielding psychos if I tried.
To my relief they were falling behind, if I hide until they went away, I could find Gina and Caitlyn later and everything would be fine. That was my plan until I tripped over a rotten log and went flying to the ground.
“Oh man”
I was lying there, dazed on the forest floor, unable to move in my confused state.
“Well, well not much of a spy are you?” came Erlin’s harsh voice from above me. All I could do was groan in reply.
“Your coming with us now spy!” laughed Marblin obnoxiously.
Ugh! I was so going to punch that guy if I ever got the chance.
I opened my eyes and saw the two of them grinning over me, and gave up all hope of seeing my friends again.

All of a sudden a voice called out from behind them
“Do not touch her, for if you take one step closer, I will kill both of you without hesitation”
The two thugs froze instantly, as a sharp twang rang out, was that a crossbow? (I occasionally did archery at school and that definitely sounded like a bow being loaded)
“Now leave at once and I will spare you your lives…Go!” the voice called to them, as they hurried off into the forest without another warning.
I sat up, my vision still blurry.
The curiously familiar voice spoke gently to me
“I can assume from the fact they were trying to capture you, means you are not an enemy assassin unlike those scoundrels?”
“Um yeah”
I mumbled rubbing my sore head tenderly.
My eyes started to regain their focus, and I lifted myself up to see, to my absolute horror, Forest-Ambusher offering me his hand in assistance.

Chapter One: Adventures in Ellivor

Chapter One

The tinny ring of the doorbell echoed through the house. Grudgingly I lifted my head from its comfortable position on the living room’s tattered leather sofa and shuffled down the dim hallway to the front door.
“Can you get it?”
called my friend Caitlyn, from the upstairs bathroom.
“I’m on it !”
I shouted back. It was near impossible to see the lock in the darkness, so fumbling for the light switch, I tripped over a trunk full of my grandmothers old books. Cursing loudly I rubbed my injured backside and got to my feet slowly, flicking the switch next to me. Turning the rusty key, the heavy oak door finally clicked open to reveal Gina in full party regalia and clutching a large pink gift bag.
“Happy Birthday Tabbie!”
, she cried in her Californian drawl. Her luminous smile disappeared when she noticed I was wearing my preferred lounging outfit of faded jeans and a retro ‘Alvin and the chipmunks’ T-shirt.
“Your not ready yet!”
she growled , crossing her arms and tapping a purple Miu Miu peep-toe at me impatiently.

Gina was not your average impoverished schoolgirl (unlike myself and Caitlyn she didn‘t need to work at the local supermarket on Sundays to make some money) she was the daughter of two exceedingly wealthy American news anchors, Tad and Hazel Freeman. Gina was just as glamorous and well -groomed as her parents and spent a sizeable chunk of her monthly allowance on designer shoes and other luxuries. I had met Gina Freeman on my first day of private school when I was thirteen years old.
I encountered her arguing in the office of the headmistress Mrs. Oates about the lack of wardrobe space in the boarders rooms.
(I myself was only allowed into St. Mary’s because of an art scholarship, I didn’t want to leave the local high school where I’d been for three years, and my best friend Caitlyn behind. However my grandmother was so thrilled when she found out I’d been accepted, I couldn’t let her down, after all she had brought me up single-handedly after my mother’s death when I was only a few months old.)
Gina was forcefully removed and given a weeks detention after she dared to comment that Mrs. Oates outfit (a garish red double breasted jacket with a sickly green pussy-bow blouse) was giving her “a severe headache”. I was still waiting nervously outside the door clutching my new timetable when she was ousted from the office.
“Jeez! It was only constructive criticism!”
she exclaimed as the door slammed behind her. Smoothing her immaculate blonde hair she turned round to walk away and saw me standing there, my eyes wide in astonishment.
“Oh! hey”
she said startled. “You must be the new girl, I’m Gina” she paused and added awkwardly ,“Can you do me a favour and not mention that to anybody…”

“Tabbie”

“Tabbie! Nice to meet you! do you need help finding your next class?”.

“Err yeah thanks, I’m looking for the art department…” I went to look at my timetable and stopped dead.
“Whoa! Are your school shoes Chanel!”
Gina gave me a little grin and gestured to her black lace up pumps with a diamante Chanel logo embellished on the back of the ankle (The sort of shoes that I fantasized about buying when I read my grandmothers copy of ‘Vogue‘ every month).
“Why of course! Always nice to meet a gal’
who appreciates fine footwear, now we had better get to Art, I think your in the Miss Phillips class with me.”

And so through our shared admiration of designer shoes we became friends. Gina came to my house every Saturday, as did Caitlyn, where we all either spent the day watching old films and musicals or out shopping on Princes street. Gina always insisted on visiting Edinburgh’s branch of Harvey Nichols, where she knew most of the shop assistants on a first name basis and vice versa.

And so three years on nothing had changed. It was the summer holidays and My grandmother had decided to spend a month in Paris with one of her old artist friends. I was on my own, so Caitlyn decided to stay in the house to keep me company and to make sure I ate something more than beans on toast (her aim was to become Scotland’s leading gourmet chef, she was the only girl I knew with Gordon Ramsay posters on her bedroom wall)

“Um I was just about to get ready…until you rang the doorbell and distracted me!” I replied, trying my best to sound indignant.
“You’re the worst liar Tabs, I bet you were sprawled out on the sofa watching ’My fair lady’ like you always do on your birthday!”
Damn. She had me there. Though I had been intending to get ready after I watched
‘I could have danced all night’.
Sighing and shaking her head Gina marched through the doorway heading for the stairs. Closing the door I followed behind her to my room. My boudoir was the converted attic, with wall to wall bookshelves, an oval skylight, bottles of paint lying in jumbled heaps and assorted paintings I had been working on lay up against the wall.
Whilst I prefer to describe my many possessions as artistic clutter, my grandmother wouldn’t agree.

Gina was now rifling through my wardrobe muttering to herself.
“Aha! This will do!”
she cried out in triumph, holding aloft a funky emerald silk and chiffon dress I’d picked up in the Topshop sale last weekend.
“Don’t you think it’s a bit dressy G?”
I asked sitting down on my cushion covered bed.
“I think its very understated chic, your sixteen today, why not celebrate it in style!”

Gina was hoping to become a fashion journalist after school, and I couldn’t think of anyone more suited to the job.
“Hmm can you see my black jeans in the wardrobe?”
Gina gave me a pitying look .
“she doesn’t deserve you” she said to the dress sadly, placing it back in the wardrobe.
Tossing me my faithful Jeans she exclaimed
“Oh I nearly forgot about your present!”
and handed me the shimmering gift bag.
“Ooh what could it be”
I said jangling the bag around, listening intently for clues.
Gina winked
“Hope you like it!”
Ripping away at the white tissue inside I saw a rectangle box nestled at the bottom.
Lifting up the box delicately I read the lettering on the lid aloud,
“Rancho Loco…can it be!”.
I lifted up the lid slowly as I was sure it was but a beautiful dream, but this was no illusion. Encased inside the box were the most incredible pair of cowboy boots I have ever laid eyes upon. They were a dangerous ruby red, inlaid with a white cherry blossom pattern. They were gorgeous.

“These are the ones you wanted right? The ones you were drawing in your sketchbook during Art?” asked Gina nervously, whilst I jus stared at the boots gob smacked.
“Uh huh” I finally managed to mumble, still in shock.

“I see Tabbie likes her boots!”
Came Caitlyn’s laughing voice from the doorway,
“How was your parents G?”
she said sitting on the bed next to me. Every summer Gina visited the family mansion for three weeks, before returning on my birthday where she stayed with me for the rest of the holidays.
“Ah, same old same old, parties, beach and shopping”.
she replied in mock boredom. I awoke from my shoe induced daze.
“Oh god I forgot to ask! Did you meet anymore celebs?”
I tried to keep the excitement from my voice.
“Now darling, celebrities are just people like you and me”
smiled Gina wagging a jewel topped fingernail at me,
“However I did get Chad Michael Murray and a few other actors numbers if your interested?”.
“Oooh”
we replied in unison, as Gina chuckled.

“Now are you going to get ready, or do I have to take the boots away”
asked Caitlyn tying her auburn hair back into a ponytail.
“I’m doing it, I’m doing it!”
I muttered putting my boots back in their box.
“We’ll be waiting downstairs!”
she called as her and Gina clattered down the spiral staircase which led down to landing.

Slipping on my black drainpipes, I searched through my wardrobe and found a red Harajuku style lace trimmed tank top which would compliment my boots perfectly.
I slid on the aforementioned dream boots, added a dab of lip-gloss and brushed out my long, dark chocolate coloured hair. I was ready.

When I eventually made it downstairs (after a few more minutes of crucial grooming), I found my two friends peculiarly standing over the chest I had knocked open earlier.
“Have you ever heard of an animal named a ‘Sqaudor’” enquired Caitlyn turning to Gina.

“Err no, but I can’t say I’ve heard of a three headed reptile called a ‘Skabelli’ either”
Gesturing to a small leather-bound book she clutched in her left hand.

Thoroughly confused I asked,
“What are you two lurking out here, for?”

“Tabbie! There you are! I thought I’d tidy up the books while we were waiting for you… well you know how long you normally take”
she gave Gina a little sideways smile.

“I resent that! ‘Little Miss clean-freak! All I need is a touch of blusher and away I go!”

Gina let out a noisy ‘not-what-you-would-expect-from-a-celebrity-newsreaders-daughter’sort of snort.
“Hah! A touch of blusher, twenty minutes of hair straightening and a lavender face mask is more like it!”

“ No way G! I think you'll find your referring to your own beauty regime!”
I responded incensed. However I was now regretting not having my nightly facemask...
Caitlyn gave a cough, rousing me from of my skincare ponderings. Caitlyn gave a cough, rousing me from of my skincare ponderings.

“Ok we can argue about this later, children. I was trying to tell you about the books remember?”

“What about the books?” I asked starting to lose interest.

“Well there kind of…well…weird”

“Weird?” I repeated puzzled

Caitlyn ventured on,
“Err well, this one for example”, she held aloft a large dark green book with copperplate lettering.
“It talks about animals I’ve never heard of and Dragons as if they exist”
Before I could think of a logical explanation, Gina let out a delighted squeal.
“Wow! Check this out guys!”
We both turned to see Gina holding aloft a silver Locket, glinting brightly under the lamplight.

“Where did you find that!”
gasped Caitlyn breathlessly.

“Well I jus opened this little blue book and it fell out of the binding” Gina turned to me, “I wonder why your Grandma would keep it in there?”
I sat down next to her and Caitlyn on the cold parquet floor,
“I’m not sure, maybe she forgot about it? Can I have a look G?”

She handed me the necklace and I held it in front of me, spinning it around on its chain to have a closer look. The locket was engraved with three intricate stars and a large shimmering stone inlaid in the centre.
“I’m certain that’s an opal in the middle”
Gina murmured pointing at the trinket,
“You see, at this party in Malibu last week, Ashlee Simpson had a ring with an opal setting exactly like tha…”
Seeing our unimpressed faces, she sighed.
“Oh ok, back to the locket of mystery!”

Unclasping the back I placed the locket around my neck,
“Can you do it up for me Cait?”

“Your not going to wear it out are you?” she replied, her eyebrow rose questioningly at me.
“No, I just want to see what it looks like on”
I stood up and looked into the gold edged mirror which hung on the wall above the chest.
“Very vintage”
remarked Gina
I examined the locket in the reflection, and it struck me there was something familiar about it.
“Can I have a look at the book you found it in?”
Gina obligingly gave me the small book, and I opened it at the first page. The page was blank except for a name untidily scrawled in the top right-hand corner, ‘Annabelle Fox’. My mothers name.

“Are you all right?”
Caitlyn asked me worriedly, and I suddenly realised I’d been staring at my mothers handwriting for the past few minutes saying nothing at all.
“Yeah sorry, was just thinking about something”

I looked down at the locket around my neck and turned it around in my fingers anxiously. Did it once belong to my mother?

Gina looked at down at her Gold Gucci watch, (which she had got in the gift bag at last years Teen Choice awards),
“Maybe we should head off? Otherwise we’ll be late for your birthday dinner at ‘The Witchery’! I had to phone them as soon as I got off the plane this afternoon so we could have the table by the window.”

(I didn’t bother asking how Gina had managed to secure a table at one of Edinburgh’s most exclusive eateries within a few hours notice, I’m sure she had her ‘people’ pull a few strings.)

I tucked the curious book into my black blazer’s pocket for later inspection. I was just about to undo the clasp around my neck, when I felt something with my finger on the reverse side of the locket. Slowly turning it over, I saw tiny looped writing impressed into the silver.
“What is it?”
Gina asked, looking over my shoulder.
“There’s words printed on the back, you can just make them out...”
Caitlyn was also now standing at my other side gazing intently at the lockets writing.

“To Ellivor,
Traveller,
You will go,
A land of both,
Friend and Foe”

We spoke these words together, and did not fully understand their meaning until the hallway glimmered out of focus and into darkness.

Yes, paragraphs, but also the basics of how to write a story aimed at a certain genre and editor. You need to learn POV and passive voice vs. action. You need to Show, not Tell. You'll learn all that talking to other writers.

Go to YahooGroups. They have lots of writing groups where you can learn this stuff from other writers, editors, and publishers. It's free. Writers love to help others. You want the agent to take you seriously, so you need to do the basics.

Yes, I can help you with an agent. But first, you need to learn how to put your story in the right format, and a few other basics. Your idea is good, but you have to learn some of the basics before you look for an agent or publisher.

Thank you, I'm sure we will. I just realized that the last time my mom and I went camping/cabin-ing together was in 1994. That was a long time ago. She's actually really looking forward to this upcoming trip.
