information technology Posted 11/14/2006 12:29:13 AM Research topic choice and issue definition In this assignment you will choose a research topic and define a specific issue within that topic (see examples of topics and issues in the table below). Your topic will be shared with several other students in the class, and you will meet with them both in class and online to share resources and provide each other with feedback. Your problem or issue (within your topic area) will be unique to you, and it will be the focus of your assignments for the rest of the semester. It must involve a recent development in communication or information technology, and it must involve a problem, a challenge, a conflict, or an unanswered question that is being debated by researchers, policymakers, or corporate strategists in relation to that technology. In order to define a specific current issue, you will need to do some preliminary exploratory research using library and Internet sources. For this assignment, you will be asked to find, copy, and fully cite two current sources on your issue. After you locate at least two sources, you will draw on them to write a one- or two-paragraph definition of your research issue. You will post your assignment in the "Assignment #2" WebCT discussion area. Based on the issue definitions that are posted for this assignment, research groups will be formed around general topics. You will then meet with your research group during the remainder of the semester to help each other with research and assignments. Choose a topic area 1.Review the examples listed on the instructions for last Monday's class, read over your classmates' WebCT postings for Assignment #1, and browse the web sites and databases listed on the COM 250 Research Resources page to learn about the range of topics you might address. 2.Reflect on the role of communication technologies your future career, current job, or social and family life. Choose a specific technology or a recent development in technology use that is relevant to you, either personally or professionally. Find current news articles and research reports on your topic 1.Starting from the web sites and journal indexes listed on the COM 250 Research Resources page in the instructions for last Monday's class, search for relevant and high-quality information sources on your topic. 2.As you read, identify a specific issue that you would like to focus on within your research topic (see above for definition and examples of a "specific issue"). 3.Find at least two relevant and high-quality information sources on your specific issue. If they are electronic articles, save them to a diskette or your hard drive. Also save the URL of each source, the name of its author, the name of the organization or periodical that published the article, and the date it was published. If your sources are offline library sources, save photocopies of them with the same source information. 4.Important note #1: you must find complete sources, not simply summaries or abstracts. 5.Important note #2: your sources must be from refereed scholarly publications or trusted, high-quality news sources. If you choose to use sources other than those listed on the COM 250 web site, please consult Dr. Wiley first to see if they are considered legitimate. Define your topic and issue 1.Following the examples above, write a one- or two-paragraph statement in which you define both your general topic and your specific issue. Be sure to identify a problem, a conflict, a challenge, or an unanswered question raised by your issue. 2.In your statement, use a fact, a statistic, or a quoted passage from each of your two sources. Be sure to use quotation marks if you use a direct quote, and give a full citation of each of your sources. 3.It is highly recommended that you write your topic and issue statement offline in order to have a backup copy. You can then copy and paste it into WebCT when you are ready to turn it in. Post your assignment in WebCT and respond to others 1.Login to the COM 250 WebCT site using your real name. 2.Click on the Discussions tool and enter the "Assignment 2" discussion area. 3.Post a message with the statement you wrote in step #3 above. In the subject heading of your message, type a brief (4- or 5-word) description of the general topic area. 4.Read others' posts to see who you want to work with.
