The park...
Posted 4/14/2008 3:05:19 PM we went to the "good park" yesterday for the first time this year. it was absolutely astounding to see the difference that about 6 months makes. You are so much surer on your feet, you climb like a mountain goat, and you had an absolute blast. we also went to look at the ducks, geese and swans - "geese go honk, ducks go quack" was your summary of the encounter. on saturday, I took you up to the indoor amusement park for a couple of rides on the merry-go-round. We had been there once before a few months ago - the amazing thing was that as we were leaving, we passed the restaurant we had lunch at last time - you tried to walk into it, saying, "I want chocolate milk and french fries" - which was what you had last time we were there. What a memory you have! last night was Michael's birthday party, but as per your usual, you stole the show. Everyone was particularly impressed with your rendition of Happy Birthday, and Michael let you blow out his candles with him. all in all, a great weekend.
hard to believe
Posted 4/11/2008 9:39:02 AM but you are already pretending to be sick so you don't have to go to school - even though you have a great time when you are there, you almost always put on a show at home... "No school today Daddy, I'm sick, I got boo-boo in dis belly" Your mind was changed when Mommy told you that you could wear your new "Thomas" running shoes to school. She also bought you some Spiderman shoes - other than me singing the theme song from the 60's cartoon, you have had no exposure to Spiderman, but you love playing like you are him - last night, we had to crawl around the floor pretending to catch "bad guys" and bringing them to the police. Spiderman then had to rescue Thomas and Percy who got trapped in the fire station. Last night you wandered into our bathroom, looked at the handles of the faucets on the tub and said - D,L,O,C - dat spell cold, H,O,T that spell hot - burn my hands this morning before school I spelled out Go, Stop and No, with your letters - which you read - I was getting really impressed, until I spelled out Z-O-O and you told me it spelled "alpha-pig"...oh well.
Random snippets
Posted 4/10/2008 8:55:29 AM You bashed away on your drums last night when I was playing wheels on the bus on guitar and singing - midway through, you corrected me - I had sung "horn on the bus goes sweep, sweep, sweep" - you put your drum sticks down, looked up at me with an irritated/quizzical look on your face and said - "wheel on the bus goes BEEP, BEEP, BEEP Daddy!" Well, excuse me, Mr. I know all the lyrics! Later, you had just had your snack and Mommy was trying to wipe your face. You grabbed the washcloth, said "I gonna get your nose, Daddy, you got boogers" and proceeded to make me blow into the washcloth. Sometimes I wonder who's in charge around here.
Brendan and Daddy go to the park
Posted 4/9/2008 3:01:05 PM We were outside on the driveway, you riding your tricycle... "Brendan, it's late, almost bedtime" "Come on Daddy, hurry, we go to the park" "Maybe tomorrow"... "Brendan 'n Daddy go to park - Mommy stay home" at this point, you take off running down the sidewalk, and I think to myself - he'll probably tire himself out before we get there, so I'll play along. you kept up your walk/trot/jog all the way down the street, not stopping until we got to the park. It was a bit chilly, your hands were cold, and it was almost 8:00pm, but I didn't have the heart to stop you. "Daddy climb up big slide, Brendan climb up dis slide...Daddy swing in dat swing, Brendan swing in dis swing...ok Daddy, I'm all finished in swing...look dere's a number eight on dat' bicycle...uh-oh, I got choclate on my fingers...Daddy have kleenex in pocket?" Mommy came to pick us up in the truck to save us the walk back. The sun was hiding behind the trees and a sliver of a moon was in the sky. "Hi Brendan" Mommy called to you from the vehicle "Mommy - Daddy and Brendan go to the park!!!" Yes you got your way, yes you went to bed later than usual, but it was all worth it to hear the excitement in your voice and see the smile on your face when you said it.
Not such great news...
Posted 4/8/2008 10:30:14 AM They didn't tell us what we wanted to hear yesterday. Seems that instead of continuing to improve, your kidney has done a little backsliding, and they want to see us again in six months. it was a bit of a let down, but in the end, better safe than sorry - there's no immediate danger of any kidney damage, and it's only your right kidney. after we got home, you and I went to the toy store to get you something for being such a good boy at the hospital - you had to have "Lady" (a Thomas engine)- you've been asking for it for days on end now. you were so overjoyed that they actually had one in stock, a big smile came over your face, you said ooooooooooooooooohhhhh!!!! and your hands were almost shaking when you held the box. we had a great play last night
You had a great weekend
Posted 4/7/2008 9:34:57 AM You stayed up at Nonni's with Mommy on Friday night, got to play with Luke, and then, when I got home Saturday night, we all went out to a big banquet dinner.. All things considered, you did pretty well - you ran around with all the other little kids (more like a pack of wild dogs than anything else). Back and forth, on and off the dance floor, out in the lobby, weaving through peoples' legs, but not totally out of control. Luke slept over at our place on Saturday night, and Sunday was another day of mayhem at the house. Granda flew back from Florida and came over with Murphy - we went to the park for the first time since last fall - you loooved the swings, we went down the big slide, and you got to go exploring in the woods, as well as chasing some geese around. All in all, a great time. You have a kidney appointment today at Sick Kids - hopefully the last time we have to go.
Back to School...
Posted 4/4/2008 11:01:41 AM for the first (and last day this week). You actually managed to sleep through the night for the first time since you got sick a week ago. last night I watched your face as Mommy read you a story before bed - you were interested, comfortable and totally content. It reminded me of when you were really tiny and I would spend hours on end watching you sleep. Nonno's still in hospital - you may be going up to see him. I'm sure that will brighten his day. I'm off to Montreal for tonight/tomorrow - you be good for Mommy, and I'll see you tomorrow night when I get back.
Auntie Melanie
Posted 4/3/2008 9:09:20 AM ...and Murphy came over last night for a sleepover. Granda's down in Florida with his brother. You had great fun with Melanie, and she convinced us to let you stay home from school today so you, her and Murphy can hang out together this morning. Last night, she made a tent for you up in your room, and she's looking forward to this morning as well. When I left she had you sitting up on the kitchen counter, eating peanut butter soldiers and drinking chocolate milk. She loves you so much, Brendan. Nonno has been in the hospital for the past couple of days with some gall bladder trouble. We made him a get well card, which then led you to want to make cards for Mommy, me, Murphy, Melanie and Nonna. You did your best to "sign" the cards, and they all have a bunch of stickers on them. You even made one for Luda, our housecleaner...she loved it!
I no go school anymore Daddy
Posted 4/2/2008 9:09:19 AM was what you told me this morning - you've been off for a couple of days since you've had your fever/cough you have a play doctor's kit you use on us all the time now, you check our heartbeats, our eyes, our ears, and give us "medicine" - most of the time banana or raspberry. For a while now, I've been wondering why you don't ask "why" at all - I know it's supposed to be all the rage for kids your age. You've more than made up for it with your two favourite questions, that you pepper us with constantly "What dat ting call?" "What dat spell?" You will ask those questions over and over - yesterday at the dinner table, you pointed to a box of kleenex and said "What dat ting call"? I said "Brendan, you know very well what that is" (a few days ago, you said "Daddy, kleenex pease, I got boogers"). My answer didn't suit you I guess, because the next thing out of your mouth was: "Dat ting called Mum-nun bum-bun" For the rest of the night, every second object you saw was a Mum-nun bum-bun. Weird.
You sound like
Posted 4/1/2008 12:31:36 PM You've been smoking a pack a day for about 20 years. You've got a cough and fever that wakes you at night, and generally keeps you in a really sucky mood all day long. Nobody is as good as Mommy is at these times. If I go in to your room when you wake, the first words out of your mouth are "Where's Mommy"? This morning I had you in my arms, but as soon as Mommy came into the room you said "I want Mommy hold Brendan". I understand completely. Last night, I got your pajamas on you, lay you down in your bed to read to you and you promptly rolled over, facing the wall - normally you pay close attention to the books and the pictures, but last night you just closed your eyes and were asleep in under 5 minutes - Mommy came up to give you some medicine, but you were already out like a light... Get well soon Monkees!
Well
Posted 3/31/2008 11:47:15 AM It's been an extremely long absence for me from this blog, and in the interim, so much has happened... You turned 2, you now speak intelligbly to almost all who listen to you, You flew down to Nova Scotia with mommy and me for a long weekend, that included your first tobaganning experience - face covered with snow, and your first snowman You graduated from your crib to a big bed - complete with Thomas the train covers and pillows You can read some simple words - stop, go, a few other small ones, You are getting really good at pedalling your tricycle, When we got a huge dump of snow, you, me, Aiden and Miranda made a snow fort and snow tunnels outside, You really enjoyed your first Easter Egg hunt - a trail of chocolate eggs from your bedroom, to ours, downstairs to the front door and then to the kitchen, Not really sure why it's been so long to update - sometimes I just need time to recharge the batteries I guess, but know that you are never out of my mind. A week or so ago, we were sitting by the front door looking out the window at the street - you suddenly turned to me, wrapped your arms around me and said "I love you too Daddy" - that made my month!
Birthday party
Posted 2/11/2008 2:31:41 PM was yesterday - you were soooo excited all afternoon - once you woke up from your nap and saw the decorations and balloons you were beside yourself - I told you we had to wait until everyone came over before we could have cake, pull the ribbons on the diego pinata and open presents. you kept going to the front door, waiting for people to arrive, and the smile on your face when they showed up with presents for you was unbelievable - i got you to say "welcome to my party" as people arrived. everyone had a great time. luke had stayed over saturday night, and you guys had a blast, as always. your auntie melanie loves you so much that despite being really sick, she managed to make the best birthday cake for you I've ever seen - it had horses and pigs and tractors and ducks and thomas and a whole bunch of other stuff on it - it actually made your Mommy cry over how beautiful it was. Nana would have been so proud about what she made for you. it's your Mommy's birthday today - we need to give her lots of love as well - it's not all about you, all the time!
What we wouldn't give..
Posted 2/8/2008 4:24:02 PM for a night where you don't wake up - first with the fever, and now with a problem with your ear - you wake 4 or 5 times a night - it's been quite the time of it lately. you've also got a nasty cough. otherwise, you are doing great - school is going well, all sorts of new words, new songs, and on Sunday we are having a birthday party for you (a few days early, but still, wow!!!!) today would have been Nana and Granda's 50th anniversary. I know she would have loved to get a hug and a card from you = you'll just have to give Granda that much more love... just about to leave work now, and spend the weekend with you and mommy - can't wait. you sent me an email today and then later on the phone with no prompting, you blurted out "I love you Daddy"
fever...
Posted 1/31/2008 10:13:25 AM up there again last night - touched 103 at one point, but you were in a great mood nonetheless. you did however, wake up about 10 times through the night and wound up in our bed. you are up to see nonno and nonna today - first time in over 2 weeks. i'm sure they are having a blast with you today. you know almost all the words to Hop on Pop and Mr. Brown can Moo. You will "read" them to us, and it's a lot of fun to watch you do it.
Your appetite....
Posted 1/30/2008 11:12:23 AM over the past few days has been astounding...you can't seem to get enough down your gullet! last night when I took you upstairs to get your pajamas on, I stripped you down, took off your diaper and you took off on a tear. you stopped, then stood there naked, waving your arms back and forth repeating "oh no, brendan make wind" over and over. it went on for a couple of minutes, and you made me do it as well. I wish I had the videocam on you - it was priceless. you've got a fever again, so you stayed home from school - Mommy says you're in a good mood, and it doesn't seem to be bugging you. get better soon monkee.
last night's one liner
Posted 1/29/2008 10:22:43 AM "brendan hungry eat daddy's nose..umm...ummm...ummm" followed by a big smile on your face. you also have a really deep throaty laugh you use when you find something particularly amusing. sort of a cross between the count from sesame street and dr. evil. last night you were sitting on my lap and we were just chatting back and forth. I asked you if you were a good boy or a bad boy at school...you said "teacher say good boy"..I said that was great. about a minute later you looked up at me and said "maybe teacher say bad boy" ...it was difficult for me to keep a straight face. Nonno and Nonna are coming home tonight after spending 2 weeks in Costa Rica. I can only imagine how happy you will be when you see them finally - probably on Thursday.
You cracked me up this morning...
Posted 1/28/2008 12:14:53 PM Getting ready for school, I pulled your top over your head - your arms weren't through yet, so they were kind of stuck to your sides. You quipped "look, Brendan Mr. potato head". What a great way to start the week. The weekend was great - we went to the play place (you made a mardi-gras mask), you weren't sick, or crabby or whiny, you got to go on skates for the first time at my friend Alan's backyard rink, and Granda, Melanie and Murphy came over for dinner last night. You were in such a good mood all weekend long.
almost the weekend....
Posted 1/25/2008 1:30:14 PM and we don't really have a lot planned. We'll go to the play place tomorrow, probably see granda and melanie at some point, but it will just be a weekend with not a lot of rushing around - I can't wait. you understand the concept of the weekend as well - "daddy no work, brendan no school, go play place" you've had a great few days at school this week - Mommy showed me a bunch of your artwork - you were quite impressed with your cotton ball snowman, as was I. "frosted snow flakes" is your name for frosted flakes. last night in your bath, you were completely absorbed with pouring water from a cup to your water drum - we weren't sure what you were up to until you let us know "brendan make coffee" - it was obvious to you, but not to us...
I wonder...
Posted 1/24/2008 2:14:38 PM sometimes, what your reaction will be when you sit down and read these posts. I'm sure it will be a bit strange to read about all of these things. If I keep this blog up like I intend to, at some point, there will be years and years of your life on here. I hope you understand that I'm not doing this so you'll think I'm a good father, or that I'm bragging about you. Part of it is just that there are so many things you do, so many changes you go through, that it would be impossible for me to remember them all. Writing this stuff down also gives me a chance to reflect on what's going on - I won't deny that there is some spin to it, but I do try to be objective as possible. I want to give you a sense of how much you mean to Mommy and me, and what a blessing you have been.
Dry up, Granda...
Posted 1/23/2008 11:23:11 AM "holy mack-a-ral" "cant catch me, ginerbed mann" "ok daddy n bwendan n mommy race" just a few of your more recent catch phrases. instead of saying "on" and "off" when you play with light switches, you almost always refer to them as "good morning" and "sweet dreams" Last night, I took you up to bed, and for the first time in a long time, you fell asleep in my arms before I put you down in your crib. It got me to thinking about how you've grown. When you were just tiny, cradled in my arms rocking back and forth, your body didn't even reach from one side of the chair to the other. Now, you sprawl across me, your head against my neck and your feet halfway to my knees. I rocked you back and forth for a while after you drifted off, every once in a while feeling your body twitch as you fell deeper asleep.
Odds and ends
Posted 1/22/2008 3:07:36 PM finally dropped your night time bottle about a week ago when you were sick. you suddenly enjoy singing the theme from batman you will generally wake up in the morning and the first words out of your mouth will generally be what you want for breakfast "bachnana" and "nyogurt" this morning. when i get home, you break into giggles, and run around the house, leaving me waiting for my hug you still cry most days when you get dropped off at school, but you stop almost as soon as Mommy's gone. playing undercovers with a flashlight is one of your favourite things you still recognize Nana from pictures the last words you said before falling asleep the night before last were "monkey see, monkey do, monkey get in trouble too". you have a bottomless stomach when it comes to timbits
Action packed weekend.
Posted 1/21/2008 8:37:12 AM It was non-stop this weekend. We managed to get our haircuts finally. For the first time, there were no tears or squirming, you actually sat on my knee and let Teresa cut your hair (Mommy bribing you with fruit gushers and lollipops helped). A quick visit to Granda, then to an indoor amusement park - you rode on the merry-go-round with me, up in a balloon with Mommy and Daddy and on a bumper boat all by yourself. Then a drive up to Thornbury to see Luke - the pair of you had a fantastic time, doing what 2 year olds do - wreaking havoc and proving the truth of the saying that having a 2 year old is like owning a blender without a top. They had quite the snowstorm up there, and on Sunday morning, you and Luke put on your snowsuits and played outside - I pulled you both around on a sled. On the drive home, you fell asleep, which was great because the roads hadn't been plowed, the snow hadn't stopped and squalls were causing whiteout conditions. We avoided a 160 car pile-up on the 400 by taking another way home, but it took almost 3 hours... Granda, Melanie and Murphy came over for dinner last night - and Daddy actually baked ginger cookies for you. Newest accomplishment - you can now complete a 12 piece jigsaw puzzle without help.
Being tardy with my posts
Posted 1/18/2008 9:16:44 AM No real reason, just think I needed a break for a couple of days to recharge the batteries. So you are finally over your sickness (which got passed on to me and Mommy). We are all recovered. "The More We Get Together" is a song you've been singing for quite a while now, and you are now at the point where you will sing it to yourself while you're doing other things. Usually, you'll change the words to match your activity. We therefore are treated to renditions of "The More We Build our Robots", and "The More We do Our Puzzle". Your sentences and concepts are becoming more sophisticated "Daddy need scissors cut yoghurt tube" "Green light mean go, red light mean stop yellow light mean slow" Lately we've been doing shadow puppets - you are afraid of the bunny rabbit (one of only a couple I can do!). We plan to get our haircuts this weekend, then up to Luke's - we've been trying to get together for over a month now - but with you guys getting sick, and Christmas, it just hasn't happened yet. Hopefully, it will work.
Sorry I missed yesterday...
Posted 1/15/2008 10:40:08 AM But I came down with the same thing you had - not a lot of fun. Mommy has it now too. You went to school this morning and were none too pleased to be there. Last night you went to the front door, got your shoes on, tried to get your jacket down, then said "Brendan go garage - McDonalds chocolate milk an' frnc fries?" and were right pissed when we told you no. I promised to bring some home with me today. Happy belated 23rd month birthday buddy.
Played hooky today
Posted 1/11/2008 2:22:10 PM Picked you up from school - you were all talk on the drive back home. Daddy, green light mean go, red light mean stop Call mommy talk mommy phone? hello mommy ok nother green light daddy, here I am here I am run away, run away. Just finished playing downstairs with you - you have almost mastered how to pedal your tricycle. Tomorrow you and I are both going to get our hair cut. Hopefully it will go better than it has in the past. Also, Luke is supposed to come over tomorrow night for a sleepover - it's great to see the two of you play together.
You know you're a parent...
Posted 1/10/2008 10:46:53 AM When someone throws up all over you and your immediate reaction is to hold them closer and give them a hug... I had the opportunity to test the veracity of that statement more than I cared to last night. Maybe something you ate, or maybe a bit of a stomach flu, but you were quite the fountain last night. Before bed, you upchucked a couple of times, followed by at least 4 episodes during the night. You went through more pyjamas last night than you usually use during a week. Twice more this morning before I left, but I just called Mommy and she tells me the geyser hasn't gone off in a couple of hours. I've never been happier that we have hardwood and not carpet.
Oh Canada...
Posted 1/9/2008 8:05:59 AM Or more correctly in your mind, "Oh no Canada", which is how you;ve decided to sing our national anthem. You will break out into it spontaneously when you see a Canadian flag, a maple leaf, or any other flag for that matter. In the car with Mommy coming home from Nonni's house yesterday, Mommy sang Oh Canada for you - when she was done, she looked back in time to see you smile, clap your hands together and say "Yaayyy Mommy!!!". I got in the door just before 10 last night - Mommy had kept you up so we could see each other before you went to bed. It was a great way to come home. You just went out the door to school with Mommy - you are now excited/happy about going to school and playing with your friends - what a change from the first few times you went.
Hop, hop, hop...
Posted 1/7/2008 9:42:29 AM that's how you spent about half an hour yesterday, jumping around, getting both feet off the floor, running and hopping around the place with a big goofy grin on your face. you are also much more interested in kicking and throwing these days - most times it's a ball, but there have been more than a few incidents of non-approved projectiles (cars, trains etc) being thrown down the stairs so you can say "oh no, car fall down stairs, baby rescue" I watched you this morning play with 2 Bob the Builder DVD covers for about 15 minutes - you ignored the TV and instead created your own show with the pictures on the covers. "Go rolly, big Bob, little Bob, ok now fix it". Thanks to your aunt Melanie, you now love to say "brendan got big boogers, oh no", and last night, I caught you digging for gold more than once! Flying to Dallas tonight, so likely no post tomorrow. Daddy loves you Brendan.
Observations
Posted 1/4/2008 10:50:41 AM dragonfly that's what you resemble some times hovering momentarily before changing direction acceleration then buzzing stasis random movement governed by something not fathomable, I watch, fascinated, at your almost irridescent flight through my world
Being home..
Posted 1/3/2008 9:52:14 AM all last week, meant that I missed out on one of my favourite things. I ring the doorbell, bend down and look through the pane of glass on the side of the door and wait to see you running like a holy terror from wherever you are, arms swinging madly, a big toothy grin on your face and watching you mouth "Daddy Home, Daddy Home"! over and over until I get inside. You then bolt off in the other direction, back to where you came from, running just as fast and laughing, only to turn around and run back saying "daddy take gacket off!" then putting my shoes away in the closet before grabbing my hand and leading me over to whatever toy you absolutely, positively have to play with right this instant. The welcome home from you almost makes up for the fact that I didn't get to see you all day. |
