It comes as just an utter shock to wake up at 40 or 50 years of age and see an adult acne breakout in the mirror. Ugh! Chin up, there is treatment available for these kinds of acne breakouts. Manufacturers have finally wised up to the notion that adult acne sufferers have just as many concerns about their skin care as that of the traditional demographic group: teenagers. There are now several products which are clearly labeled "for adult acne". The active ingredients are basically the same. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are both found in these adult acne care products such as in the acne proactive treatment. So what is the difference? To a large extent the difference is in the solution. The concern for these products is that there be no drying of the skin. This could be caused by stronger medications especially in concentrations of the same treatment products. The manufacturers acknowledge the usefulness of FDA approved ingredients for over-the-counter adult acne care. They also keep the level of drying chemicals like benzoyl peroxide to about half strength. This allows for a mild antibiotic action and some drying of excess oils without over drying crucial spots that are prone to formation of fine lines. In the past there were only harsher versions of these chemicals to be used to fight acne in the youth market. The problems are very different since teens are experiencing overactive sebaceous glands all over their skin.
