Thoughts: Thank you Janis, Figgy, and Flapper

All I have to say to you three is, Thank You... I'm glad you're all here for me... Thank you :-)

Thoughts: Does this worry anyone else?

I just heard on CNN that Barack Obama wants to create a national police force with the same powers as the military, in order to relieve the strain that the military is facing.

I could be wrong about this, but it looks like Obama is perpetuating the police state that Bush started. Canada has a national police force. A lot of people have observed that they seem to be a law unto themselves.

For instance, in October 2007, there was the case where an unarmed Polish immigrant was shot twice with a taser at Vancouver international airport when four mounties reported to the scene to control a disturbance he was making. The Polish man later died. Inquiries into his death have been delayed at least twice and to my knowledge, the officers involved haven't been reprimanded. There have also been other cases of tasers being used on other unarmed individuals, although this one stands out because it was four officers versus one person. In addition, no attempt appeared to be made to find a translator for the man who didn't speak English.

In another instance, authorities in Canada, acting on faulty information, tipped off American authorities about a suspected terrorist. The person they tipped off the Americans about was a Canadian citizen returning home through New York City when he was detained by American authorities and deported to Syria (not Canada, his country of citizenship) where he was tortured. And as it turned out, he was totally innocent.

If Obama does go through with what CNN was reporting on, I certainly hope the agency he creates has better conduct than those two incidents I just described. Otherwise it could mean Americans everywhere have to worry, even if they don't live in the United States.

As a sidenote, if this issue was so important as to require discussion now, almost immediately after winning the election and before taking the oval office, then why was this never brought up during the election campaign?

    Thoughts: Canadians of convenience

Maybe some of you are familiar with the term "Canadians of convenience." But if you aren't, here's a brief overview.

A Canadian of convenience is/was a Canadian citizen who was living in Lebanon in 2006 during a crisis in which some Canadian citizens requested evacuation to Canada. The Canadian government paid about 94 million dollars to evacuate 15 thousand citizens.

As many as 7 thousand then returned to Lebanon within a month of being evacuated. They moved to Canada, remained here for the 3 years required to obtain citizenship, and then move back to Lebanon. Since then, they haven't been paying taxes to the Canadian government, and then all of a sudden they ask for Canadian taxpayers money to be taken out of the country, in many cases just long enough for the crisis to end, so that they can return safely and never have to pay anymore Canadian taxes, unless of course there's another crisis.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone have any ideas to keep it from happening if they're against it?

Personally, I'm against it. I'm of the opinion where if you make a bed, you have to lay down and sleep in it. Much like what Canadians did when they re-elected a conservative government. (That's another post.) One way to solve the problem is to make it a requirement to give up all other nationalities to obtain Canadian citizenship. Currently, if a Canadian moves to the United States, he or she has to give up Canadian citizenship to become an American citizen. In Canada, this isn't the case. Immigrants who are granted Canadian citizenship aren't required to give up their citizenship, and they can become a dual citizen.

    Thoughts: California bans gay marriage

Just curious, what are your thoughts folks, about California banning gay marriage, along with the states of Florida and I believe Arizona?

Was just curious. Read a news article on CBC about the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage within the three states and then read the user comments. Most of them were pretty scathing, with one person going as far as saying "And as for everyone who supports it, shame on you. I sincerely hope that someday you are in the minority and your rights are stamped upon by an ignorant and bigoted populace." The article and all it's comments can be found here.

I mostly agree with the comments critical of the amendment. What I find interesting is that California voters overwhelmingly supported Obama for president, and then they promptly support a measure that John McCain would likely propose given the chance. Thoughts?

    General: I QUIT! :-D

Yes sir ladies and gentleman. I finally quit that dreaded job that was killing me mentally. I'm done on the 18th. Party at my place on the 21st! Bring lots of rum, beer, and cigarettes! The party isn't over till someone gets alcohol poisoning or lung cancer :-D

    Thoughts: Where's the tension?

Why is everyone else excited to go to Mexico when I'm not? Why is everyone else stressed out over school and work and I'm not? Why does everyone find some classes a total drag, others great, and I just don't seem to care one way or the other?

Where's the tension? I've even stopped worrying about most things. Ask Esther, it's not like me to not worry. It feels weird not to worry. If the worrying hadn't disappeared from my life, I'd be worried that something is missing. But for whatever reason I just don't care anymore.

Time for a smoke. Lung cancer is also something I've stopped worrying about.

Dreams: I used to like snakes...

So, I was at school, somehow snacking on some pumpkin flavoured sugar cookies. Then this guy walks in with a cage and a crowd starts to gather.

He begins talking, explaining that in the cage is a highly dangerous snake, the deadliest in the world. He explained that once bitten, the venom, even if just a drop of it, will circulate throughout the bloodstream, causing it to clot so badly that the entire bloodstream turns into sludge in a matter of minutes and the person dies of a heart attack.

He said he was going to then release the snake from it's cage to show everybody. A lady there begged him not to do it, that he could get hurt, or hurt somebody else. He said that he knew the snake, it was highly trained, tame even, and that it was safe.

Disregarding her warning, he took out the snake and held it. The snake looked around very curiously. But for whatever reason, I felt threatened by it. So i rushed up, grabbed it's head, and bashed it several times against the floor, killing it.

I felt a little pinprick just before the last blow that killed it. Somehow the snake had bitten my right hand. Given that the nearest hospital was thirty minutes, away, I was as good as dead.

    Thoughts: Red tape

So, in class yesterday we got the itinerary for the flights to and from Mexico. First, we drive up to Bangor over in Maine, and we have to be there by 5 in the morning. So since it's a four hour drive there, I have to leave at 2 in the morning, because Maine is an hour behind us.

I can just picture it now. I go over in the dead of night and the guard asks "Where are you going?" "I'm going to Mexico." Yeah, I can see a Maine border guard getting suspicious very fast over that one...

If I get to Bangor, we then fly to Philidelphia. We have 58 minutes to get through the airport and make it to our connecting flight which takes us to Cancun. Not enough time to even smoke a cigarette and then get back through security. God that's gonna be a long flight...

Then we land in Cancun. We have to explain to the Mexican customs agents that we're going to be in the country for 80 days and explain why we'll be there so long. Assuming nothing goes wrong there, we then take a 4 hour bus ride through the jungle to get to our destination, which is Merida.

Then the return trip is going to be fun. We take the 4 hour bus ride back to Cancun, and then because we're foreigners, we need to report to Mexican customs to give them our tourist card before leaving Mexico.

Then we arrive in Philidelphia and have to report to the American customs agents there. That should be good. A Canadian citizen, arriving from Mexico after two and a half months, with a plane ticket that doesn't even take him out of the country. It only goes as far as Maine.

Then after getting to Bangor, it's a 2 hour drive back to Canadian soil, or 3 hours if you count the time difference, and then I report to the Canadian border guards, where I have to explain all over again that I've been out of the country for two and a half months. Then I'll need to go into the office and fill out a customs declaration form and go through all that fun red tape.

But then at least I'll be on home soil, with a liter of tequila and two hundred cigarettes to mellow out to after I get back home. Oh this is gonna be fun...

Breathe. Everything will be just fine :-) Somehow...

    Poetry: Standing on the docks

There she was, standing on the dock
Moonlight on the water, shining through her hair
Looking out over the ocean, at the land over there.
Her gaze on the golden lights, steady as a rock.

Staring at Canada, watching where he was
Peering over the ocean, knowing he was peering back.
Her gaze, the light cutting through a night pitch black
Looking out over the ocean, as he always does.

There he was, standing on the pier
Moonlight in the water and shining on his face
Fixated on the other side, almost like he could hear,
Her gaze on the golden lights, and their own hearts race.

Staring at America, watching where she stood
Staring over the ocean, knowing what she saw
Wanting to swim across, if only he could.
The whole thought had in it but one flaw...

    General: Nothing to say here

Just wanted to say that I'm still alive, and I'm here on occasion reading what others have to say. Just I have absolutely nothing to say myself.

    Thoughts: Nervousness sucks

So, I'm a giant bundle of stressed nerves that's about to crack. The trip tomorrow has me so worried. Last time I crossed the border and told the guards I was going to Bangor, I was detained for a half hour for questioning and searching. I'm not looking for a repeat of that, but I guess that is my biggest concern.

Then of course there's the three nights over there. First night will be spent alone, in a hotel room, out of the country for really the first time. (The first time I've been more than 5 miles from the border anyway. First night out of country too.) Well, at least it'll be worth it. Means cheap booze both to enjoy there and take back. Eh, I know that everything will be fine, just the worrying about it and all, and what happened the last time...

So anyway, the countdown will hopefully be counting down to my safe arrival in Bangor. It's on eastern time, so, for those of you that live in Central, subtract an hour, in Mountain, subtract two, ect... Hope to see you all next week alive and in one piece, and not in an American jail.

General: Figgy's stupid pills got to my college

Yup. Because of the college wanting me to somehow come up with 4600 dollars in fees, I need to make an unexpected trip there today. That's gonna burn a lot of gas, particularly since I'm going to be returning to school in less than two weeks anyway. And what a waste of gas. 40 dollars worth to get there and back. And it's not like they're gonna reimburse me or anything.

At least some good comes out of it. I get to hop across the border to Maine. Mainly since if I don't, I won't have enough money to get back home... Thank god this is my second and final year with that "institution of higher learning." Higher learning center on smuggled stupid pills I guess.

Thoughts: The trip and the end of one good thing

Got to thinking about the trip and all. Only eight days to go now. Thought that was great, until I got to thinking, it is great, but I also lose a great thing because of it.

When I leave, I'll be in Maine for 3 days. Then I return on the 5th. After I unpack, I have to wash all my clothes, pack them up again, and get ready to leave on the 6th. First, to vote in advanced polls in the federal election, and then to go back to college which begins on Wednesday.

I don't want to go back to Saint Andrews. Granted, I'll like my job again when I do to some extent. But I'll go from keeping in regular touch to all of my friends down to probably just keeping in touch with one or two. The others don't believe in email or texting I guess.

Means leaving those kittens behind for the first time too. At least I'm bringing back some cheap liquor to help break down some of the stress for the first few days :-P

Nine days left till we meet Esther. Not soon enough, as much as I don't want to leave this place for another eight months.

Thoughts: Why cats are better than dogs

I know some out you out there will disagree with this statement, but cats are better than dogs. And here's why.

First, dogs generally don't go around getting rid of mice that are trying to find a way into your home to eat your food. No sir. The dog would rather let the mouse in and then help him eat all of your food. A cat however will get rid of any mouse problems you have. In addition, a cat won't eat as much food and is just as happy to be paid in fish rather than steak or expensive dog food.

Second, cats are very independent. They don't insist on following you all over creation or taking up their half of the bed out of the middle in the over night. But guess what, if you jumped off a bridge, a dog would be dumb enough to jump after you. A cat is smart enough not to jump. And even if the cat did for some reason want to jump, cats always land on their feet.

Also, cats aren't as loud as dogs, or as high strung for the most part. Cats don't bark at everyone that walks within a half mile of the house. Cats also aren't the ones making headlines for animal attacks against humans.

Another way their better is that most cats can climb trees, very fast at that. Most dogs can't. Also, a cat knows that it can catch that bird if it wants to. A dog, doesn't know that it can't catch that bird even if it did want to. Cats also tend not to bury their food rather than eat it, or go playing in the mud after a bath.

And if all that isn't enough, cats usually live longer. Why else would we have 7 cats and only 1 dog? Later folks.

    General: International travel is fun

Just so you guys know, I have not fallen off the face of the earth. But I won't be on here much between now and the second week in October.

Well, I finally got this trip prepared. I got the bus ticket earlier this week and I prepaid the room yesterday. All I need is to set aside some spending money from next weeks paycheque and I'm good to go. Bangor is gonna rock. The one thing that will suck is I'll get out of one country flogging campaign ads just to get into another country flogging campaign ads.

    General: Newblog's google advertisements

It's funny how they work. You as the blogger have limited control over what ads get displayed. If you want specific ads to appear, then write about what you want to appear.

Has anyone else found this to be true? When I posted my first entry, I compared text messaging to nicotine addiction. And then I got ads for electronic cigarettes and stop smoking aids. And then tonight when I went to read the comments on the post about the old Tom cat, I got ads about pest control, because I mentioned how he often helped with controling pests in our house.

Anyone else notice this, either on their blogs or other people's blogs?

General: So long old Tom. See you at the bridge

Well, the old tom cat just passed away. He was almost thirteen years old and in the past few weeks his health had been going downhill. He was getting thinner, less interested in hunting, less aggressive towards the kittens (he hated them), and his eyes became rheumy. We knew his days were numbered. We just figured he'd make it to the autumn I guess.

My mother gave him to me as an early Christmas gift in 1995. From the get go he was aggressive. I remember in third grade constantly going to school with my hands covered in scratches, just from this little tiny kitten. He seemed to get along with Jester, a labrador retriever we had at the time, despite the fact that he must have looked like a monster to this little kitten. I remember the first time he set foot outside. He seemed to enjoy the outdoors. He always did from that point on.

Not long after that we moved away, took the pets with us. He helped us with rodent control a lot in the past. Whenever there was a mouse problem, he'd catch them all for us. Brought home the occasional rat to show how good a hunter he was, lol.

He was with us a good long time. I certainly hope he's waiting at the rainbow bridge, and getting along with Nicole up there. So long old Tom. We miss you. I'll be there someday to collect you and the others.

    Thoughts: Study: Fish need water

I was on NBC's website tonight at work (shh. Don't tell my bosses. I'll get in even worse trouble) and that was one of the headlines that came up in the headlines section. Sure we've all seen/read dumb things before, either in the paper, in instructions, on signs, wherever. Share some of the stranger/funnier ones here. We could all use a laugh. Here's a couple of my own...

The picture depicted a deer standing in front of a road sign, with the headline reading "More bilingual signs needed." (For the deer?)

"The patient was referred to a psychiatrist with a severe emotional disorder." (Who knew the psychiatrist had such severe issues?)

Come on, share. We could all use a laugh :-)

Dreams: Wind power not the solution to the oil crisis

At least not according to this latest bizarre dream... It was about a windfarm that used tame animals to help out with operations, such as moving smaller turbines to windier areas.

Well, this one bird was trying to move one of the turbines when it tipped over and caught fire, also setting fire to the bird. The fire on the turbine burned itself out after a few seconds but the bird ran around until it burned to death.

Then an odd substance started leaking from the turbine. It pooled into a nearby ditch and eventually ran into a pond. We thought it was water at first. And in fact, a dog came by and started drinking large quantities of this liquid, until it ran away yelping in pain. We realized then it wasn't water.

We checked where the liquid was flowing and the pond was teeming with life. A turtle swam up and ate a fish that was in the water. Lots of other fish were swimming around in the water, which was now being polluted with what we figured was benzene.

We went back to the liquid and took a quick smell. Yup. Smelled sweet. Definitely could be benzene. We checked back on the pond about 20 minutes afterwards, when we went to look for someone to tell about the accident. The fish and the turtle were all lying dead at the problem.

I guess the moral of the story is don't use animals to move wind turbines full of benzene.

Dreams: Newblog as a caste system

Yes. That's exactly how it was. Newblog was a caste system. Scoots of course was at the top, in the highest caste all by himself. Right below him in the caste system were the moderators. They were in a caste all by themself.

And then there were the other newbloggers. They were at various points in the system. You got to the next level in the system by posting a great or brilliant entry, just by being a newblogger for a certain amount of time, things like that.

So what were the benefits? Well, think of it this way. The guy at the top could rewrite this entire website to try to keep away spammers. That and being higher up in the caste system gave you access to cooler features on Newblog, like automatic spell checking, saving blogs on the go, or cooking tea. (Don't ask me how that last one worked.) It was a weird and wonderful system by any stretch of the imagination.

    General: Vacation!

Yup. It looks very much like I'm taking a mini vacation this October. I can't wait. And what's the best place to vacation at? Vacationland of course. I'm going to Maine for two days. I've already booked hotel reservations. I plan to get bus tickets and save up some spending money. I have my passport all ready to go, the whole nine yards. And best of all, I'll get to meet a friend of mine that I haven't met offline before :-D This is awesome.

Thank you life, you've been great to me tonight.

    Dreams: Enjoying nature

This one was, unique, I'll say the least. Didn't travel this time, except to the top of a forested hill near my house. There was a small field at the summit, but we were totally surrounded by forest. We being this girl I was with and me.

We agreed to stay there just to observe and enjoy nature, and watch the animals that came by. We got to talking soon afterwards though, about nature, then about the various things that we had in common.

And then we kissed. It was the strangest thing, since I haven't got a romantic bone in my body and little interest in anything to do with relationships. Kissing turned into making out. And then... the dream ended. But it sure made my day.

    Thoughts: Is text messaging addictive?

I laughed when I first heard that texting has addictive properties. How could someone like me go from 8 thousand texts in one month to fewer than a hundred in less than a year if they were so addictive?

Apparently a study by Nokia though has concluded that text messaging is highly addictive, more so than tobacco smoking. That I flat out didn't believe. If nobody texts me back, I stop texting. I don't stop smoking just because there's nobody to smoke with.

So I asked someone who's majored in psychology and sociology in university. My father. He agrees with the study. "How many text messages do you send a day?" he asks.

"Two or three hundred." I reply. (Now that there's people to text.) "And how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?"

"Six." "Well there you go." I guess his reasoning is that I send 50 texts for every cigarette I smoke, and therefore, I'm hooked on both and will find cigarettes easier to quit.

News to me. I found going without texts easy for that three weeks in June and July. Cigarettes, not so much. Texting isn't addictive, certainly no more addictive than any drug you can buy in the stores.
