Let me know what you think...

269 Quarter finalists out of 1,169 submitted

Snowy Nights

A creaking chair
Swaying back and forth
An old lady sits
Window pane only knows north

Her body is molded
Her legs just sway
She sits in her chair
Her thoughts are miles away

Snowflakes glisten
Reflecting off the glass
She dreams of snow angels
But those days have passed

A fireplace puts a glow
Upon her tired face
Heats her cold heart
For love has lost it's place

Winter is her favorite season
Here she sits alone
Snowy nights surround her
She rocks herself to stone

CSA’s Top Twelve Tips for Holiday Home Safety

1. Going out? Lights out! Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or when going to bed.

2. Don’t be dismayed, but discard the frayed. Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. When replacing bulbs, unplug the light string and be sure to match voltage and wattage to the original bulb.

3. Help your tree resist a fire. Try to purchase a freshly cut tree, as they are more resistant to fire. Keep your Christmas tree watered and far away from open candles. When using an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled fire resistant. Regardless of the type of tree, place it away from heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.

4. Contain any flames. Don’t use open flames or candles on or near flammable materials such as wreaths, natural trees or paper decorations.

5. Check for a certification mark. When purchasing light strings, extension cords, spotlights, electrical decorations, gas appliances or carbon monoxide alarms, look for the certification mark of an accredited certification organization such as CSA International, UL or ELT to ensure that the products comply with applicable standards for safety and performance. Also know the warning signs of counterfeit – and potentially unsafe – decorations, products and gifts. These warning signs include missing parts, instructions, safety features or warrantees; packaging with spelling mistakes or poor graphics; or products significantly lower-priced than all other brands.

6. Use one and be done. Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead use a single cord that is long enough to reach to the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled.

7. Don’t meddle with outdoor metal. When hanging outdoor lights, keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters. Use insulated tape or plastic clips instead of metal nails or tacks to hold them in place, and be sure to choose the correct ladder for the job.

8. Remember that timing is everything. Use a certified outdoor timer to switch lights on and off. Lights should be turned on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour.

9. Keep the gas behind glass. Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked or broken. Only allow a qualified service person to replace fireplace parts.

10. Be alarmed. Be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home – especially near sleeping areas – and test the alarms monthly.

11. Be a friend to your furnace. To help prevent CO hazards in your home, have a qualified heating contractor perform a yearly maintenance check of your furnace and venting system, and clean or replace your furnace filter frequently during the heating seasons.

12. Clean the clutter. Do not store combustible materials such as gasoline, propane, paper, chemicals, paint, rags and cleaning products near your gas furnace. Gasoline or propane cylinders should only be stored outside the home.

Holiday Action Saves a Sour Shopping Season
[By: Beka Ruse]

Usually, U.S. retailers earn 20-80% of their entire yearly gross during the holiday season. But this year, things are different. The sluggish US economy has prompted Deloitte Research's Carl Steidtmann to fear "the worst Christmas ever" in the retail sector.

Short of going door to door in a Santa suit, how can businesses increase profits and prevent a blue Christmas? Despite economic gloom, industry leaders have found that an e-mail follow up strategy can increase sales by a cheery 35%! To weather the ailing economy, use a follow up autoresponder during your holiday campaigns.

What Does It Do?
Follow up autoresponders follow up with your leads for you. You create a series of messages, and decide when they should be sent, (daily, weekly, etc.). Your autoresponder will send the messages to each new lead automatically. With no further intervention from you, your leads will remember you throughout the winter chill. And this regular reminding will mean more sales during the all-important holiday shopping season.

Give yourself the gift of a higher conversion rate! Follow up automatically using these simple steps:
Offer Useful Information
Personalize Your Messages
Track Your Leads

Broadcast Tailor-Made Offers
Offer Useful Information
Write your follow up messages for your leads - not for yourself. You want to talk about your great service, but your leads just want to know what they'll get out of it!

At some point, you must have purchased something like your product. What were you looking for then? Was it information about pricing, styles, or holiday gift wrapping? Maybe just a clearer explanation of the product? Figure that out, and put the answer in your follow up messages. That's what your leads want to know.

Personalize Your Messages
You don't open postal mail addressed to "Current Resident", and your leads aren't going to read e-mail addressed to "Dear Internet Friend." People are simply more likely to read messages that address them by name.

Autoresponders let you use variables to personalize your messages. This way, you write just one message, but Lenny Lead reads "Happy Holidays, Lenny!" while Kate Customer reads "Happy Holidays, Kate!"

Names are only the beginning of the personalization features available, though. In addition to full, first, and last names, some autoresponders let you add e-mail addresses, dates, or an ad category. The best even correct the capitalization in your leads' names, giving your messages a much more professional look.

Track Your Leads
Get even better results from your snowballing list of leads by experimenting with follow up content and timing. Your experimentation will be much more successful if you have access to proper statistics.

Only use a follow up autoresponder that offers detailed lead statistics. Look for live, graphical stats that show your incoming leads broken down by day / week / month, all of your active leads, and leads who have requested removal from your list.

Broadcast Tailor-Made Offers
To get more bang for your holiday buck, look for an autoresponder that also lets you broadcast extra e-mails to all of your leads. Some even allow you to send tailor-made offers only to leads who meet certain criteria.

For instance, send everyone who's been on your list for a month a special discount. Or, notify all leads interested in a certain product when a new shipment comes in.

Follow up messages keep leads warm. Use periodic broadcasts to convert them to sales!

Prevent a Crummy Christmas
Businesses of all sizes have seen their sales grow by leaps and bounds because of automated follow up. Implement your follow up strategy now to make the best use of holiday leads! Then, enjoy the season - your autoresponder is following up for you!

Please feel free to add on. My first question is:

Why aren't women born with birth control and you just take a pill to get pregnant?

Just one of those days ya know what I mean? Having a hard time keeping up with everything. Since I don't drink very much I try to find other ways to vent.

Not that laying in a chair and having a needle go into your skin thousands of times is better or anything. I already have 5 of them. My oldest son has many more. Well, actually all my son's have many more.

I just can't seem to figure out what I want. I need to stay "professional" looking most of the time too.

Hmmm...I guess my next challenge is to find something I like, or just draw it myself.

Well, off to bed to ponder this thought!

We all have tats! Chris and Robin are covered...the rest of us just have them here and there!

Sweet dreams to all!

I'll Always Have What You'll Never Want

The sunrises
I'm still me
Moving right along
Can't you see

I have a goal
This will never change
I bought a house
It isn't that strange

I'm happy
Optimistic all the time
I love all seasons
Time is all mine

Holidays ring true
I paint and draw
I learn every day
From something I did or saw

I became skilled
In more ways than one
I am a mother
To daughters and sons

I am stable
I can dance
I cannot hate
But I love romance

You,
I will always haunt
I'll Always have the things
You'll never want

A Mother Never Sleeps

Nothin like a road trip
In the middle of the night
Josh was hitch hiking
Him and his dad got into a fight

How did I find out...
He's my son's best friend
Another adopted son of mine
My love has no end

11pm
In my sleeping attire
I head north for two hours
Blood pressure getting higher

He waited in a parking lot
I told him this to shall pass
Turned him around then
Kicked him in the a--!

I do not allow hitch hiking
No matter where you are
Now get in the truck
Vegas and my son isn't too far

His dad is an alcoholic
Means words are all he can say
Josh told him he needs help
He's hurting the kids each and every day

A bruise on his cheek
From a punch from his dad
He didn't what to hear what was said
For alcohol sees no bad

Driving two hours south now
Just a couple of his bags in tow
Bought him a ticket at the airport
At 6:20am, off to Vegas he goes

5am, Headin due east
Coffee in hand
Sammi and Vicky calls
They're buried in the sand

Out four wheelin'
With no spot light to see
Now I'm gathering up 2x4, chains, shovels
Trying to find them in ebony

Two trucks isn't enough
We went to get more
Finally got it out
I'm going to bed...can't take anymore

Good night!

Now this is a great day with the kids!

And the poor kitty cat can't get the lizard! LOL

My best friend died in July of 2007. He had just start a racing team called "Jesus Racing".

I guess Jesus always wins!

Patrick left for the Army :(

Mike too :( :(

Alex F. came home for a week. He's in the Army. Stationed in Alaska.

We lost Alex A. in Iraq this year. May he rest in peace and race his quads everywhere he goes. I Love You!

I know, it sounds strange. I workaholic mother wanting more hours? Well, I do. There is never enough minutes for me to do the things I want to. I love each and everyone of my kids.

My children range from the ages of 16 to 24. This is a handleful of course. Wouldn't trade it for all the gold in the world!

Just when I think I've seen and done everything through their eyes...WHAM! Something new. I really wish the government would give credit for parental experiences. They would owe me trillions of dollars.

I see plenty of articles for new parents. What about the ones who aren't so new? Do you miss having "real" intelligant conversations? Ever wonder where your life went when you look in the mirror and see wrinkles?

Well, this is the start of my blogging world. I hope you enjoy!
