Grumblings: Right or wrong, these are just some observations.
Posted 5/14/2008 8:55:06 PM
The differences between a Military operation, and a "peaceful protest" as performed by SOME liberals.
A military operation is usually planned for weeks, with targets selected because of thier strategic value. They are usually targets that enable the enemy to continue to wage war against the military.
A "Peaceful Protest" is often only thought out as far as getting permits and how much media coverage can be obtained. The target is usually a nebulous object, such as an idea, or a corporation whose main headquarters is probably located thousands of miles away.
A military operation must be approved by a chain of command, and has many analysis of the consequences performed before it is even submitted to the Commanding officers for approval
A "Peaceful Protest" usually has a loose organization of coordinators, and the logistics are usually limited to getting the people to the site, and making sure they have banners and signs.
A military operation has rules, that must be adhered to. If they are broken, someone is held responsible.
A "Peaceful Protest" has very limited rules. Most seem to enjoy when anarchy breaks out.
A military operation tries to minimize damage.
A "Peaceful Protest" seems to revel in damage and chaos.
A military operation tries to minimize casualties from the civilians.
A "Peaceful Protest" has no concern for others who do not share thier point of view.
A military operation is scrutinized by the public, and accepts the criticisms heaped upon it.
A "Peaceful Protest" meets scrutiny and criticism with statements of oppression, bigotry, and "Police State".

Yes folks, it is true. Through a freak accident, scientists have cloned a Unix Admin. Now the world will run much more efficiently, even if all responses will be heavily weighted with sarcasm and a "I am better than you simple, lowly, windows user..." attitude.
Here is the Proof!!!!!

Pappa got a brand new toy
Posted 3/22/2008 5:20:47 AM
Well, another year closer to death. As part of a birthday gift to myself, (along with my new 42inch hd tv), i bought a SLR camera (digital) and am just starting to learn to use it. Since I have always been fascinated with the moon and the outdoors, i decided to learn how to shoot the moon (LOL).
This part may be done wrong, or explained wrong, but here goes:
i used a 1/100s aperature, with an 8.0 fstop, and iso of 100, with metering mode set to center, and did some post prod work by decreasing the brightness and increasing the contrast... and the result is........

Hope you like it.

Gaming fun: The Quick and the Dead (Session 2, part 2)
Posted 8/9/2007 12:23:35 PM
"Enough of this" Shanasha shouts to the group, and using a burst of speed uncommon in most dwarves the female monk sprints around the vines and comes within 10 feet of the shaman.
Meanwhile Grock, in a rage of barbarian fury has continued to deal a large amount of damage to the Half-Giant, but every time he seems to get the better of his opponent, both shamans heal the behemoth for nearly all the damage. Shanasha is hit with a sickly green ray from the sorcerer on the barricades, draining her of her strength. The next round, another beam strikes Grock, reducing the effectiveness of his blows. Grock shrugs this off, continuing his attack, and with Shanasha's distraction of the shamans, finally finishes the massive hobgoblin off.
The Stronger shaman seeing his leader cut down despite his efforts, and seeing the other members of this squad defeated by the remaining party members, decides that retreat is a better course of action, but not before summoning a hippogriff to battle for him as he makes his escape.
Just as the party was about to relax, another 6 hobgoblins lead by another half-giant come screaming over the bridge and prepare for battle. Another fireball explodes within the group, who is by this time looking battle weary and worn. Shanasha and Grock quickly move forward to intercept, and both of them receive a quick boost to thier strength from Quincy who has finally made it around the vines.
The long battle has taken its toll on Grock however, and unable to keep up the fury he starts to breath heavily. Quincy quickly takes action and whipping a wand from his belt touches Grock, relieving him of his fatigue. The party is beginning to worry, for even though they are killing off their opponents, they are taking heavy casualties.
Suddenly, a wall of gloom and shadows descends upon the battlefield, separating both parties from each other. This wall is so thick, so dark, not even the darkvision of the dwarves and half-orc can see through it.
The party is wary of entering the wall, even after Quincy determines that it is nothing more than a Wall of Gloom, an area of darkness. The whispering voices coming from it are disconcerting to say the least.
As the party prepares for the next onslaught, the wall finally disappears as quickly as it appeared. Where they expected opponents, none were found.
Gialdor was the first to notice the band of hobgoblins fleeing, over 200' away. Not only the ones they had fought, but another group of had joined them and were fleeing as well.
The battle had been won, but the costs were heavy. Almost all magic had been used by Quincy, and Grock was still looking injured even after some healing by the ranger and cleric.
Deciding that rest was more important than pushing forward into the Church, the party relied upon the ranger to find them a safe campsite for the night to lick their wounds.

Gaming fun: The Quick and the Dead (Session 2, part 1)
Posted 8/7/2007 6:33:39 PM
After defeating the ghoul mules, the party quickly traversed the forest. The old road to the church had become disused over the centuries, and much of the forest had taken the roadway back. Finally the party emerged from the trees finding a remnant of the road that proceeded southward back into the forest, and north towards a large structure, presumably the old church.
However their way to the doors was blocked by a large barricade in front a bridge. This barricade was guarded by a extremely large, orange skinned humanoid and several other humanoids that Gialdor the ranger was able to identify as Hobgoblins. As the party approached, the giant hobgoblins bellowed out his warning.
"You are encroaching upon lands claimed by the Che'Tak clan. Leave your belongings and go, and we may let you live." he bellowed, bringing to bear an evil looking dire flail. The party spoke amongst themselves for a few second, and just as Shanasha was about to respond with some possible compromise, Grock rushed forward weilding his great sword. Gialdor let loose an arrow that would be impossible for others to make and nailed the half-giant in the shoulder. Gerda rushed forward, and speaking an arcane language touched Grock on the thigh, causing the already large half-orc to double in size, becoming nearly 14 feet tall, and causing his footsteps to shake the ground with each step he took.
The Che'Tak quickly seperated, the huge half-giant striding forward to meet Grock, while the other 3 split up to try to flank the party. As the rest of the party began to move to help Grock, a huge wall of impenatrable vines sprung up, seperating the barbarian from the party.
Shanasha quickly located the source of the vines, as she noticed another hobgoblin weaving shamanic magic. Meanwhile Grock and the Half-giant were trading blows, but the Half-giant had help from a lower level hobgoblin shaman, as well as the one that cast the wall of vines. The party began moving forward when much to thier dismay a small orange bead came flying from a previously unseen hobgoblin, and exploded in a fireball right in their midst. The monk was able to avoid the effects completely, but the cleric and fighter were badly singed. A moment later another explosion from another fireball further hurt the party.

The Quick and the Dead (Session 1, part 3)
Posted 8/7/2007 3:04:57 PM
"Oh great.. We will be fighting Werewolves" Shanasha's player says out of character, and I chuckle softly to myself... No, no my little monkeys, dance for the Hurdy Gurdy.. for you will not be pitted against the lycanthropes.. No.. this is just a red-herring Muhahahahahahhah *cough*
The party continues to search the rest of the house, finding another stash of silver weapons, and then goes back down the ladder to the kitchen area. There they find the remains of the farmer's wife, slumped in the corner. As they are about to leave, a ghostly apparition appears. Quincy, the priest of Correllon prepares to turn the spirit, when the ghost begs them to stop and listen to her tale of woe. She then tells the party of the horrible attack on her house, and the death of her husband. But worse, the kidnapping of their young daughter, and that the creatures took her child alive to the old Church of WeeJas. The ghost has been able to find out that the undead were under the control of an evil Necromancer, who wishes to use the child in some sort of vile rite to create undead. The party agrees to help the ghost and try to rescue her child. Before they leave the farm they investigate the barn, which also shows sign of activity.
Within the barn another scene of carnage greets the party, with animals slaughtered and feasted upon by what apparently was undead. There were two creatures left in a relatively unharmed state, compared to the rest of the animals. These mules however were not what they appeared. A form of Ghoul Fever has taken them, and they have changed into a form of undead that is able to afflict animals and monster alike! These "ghoul mules" (and yes, I did laugh at my monster creations) quickly attacked the party. The priest tried to turn them, but even the mighty power of Correllon was only able to damage them slightly, as the priest thought he would easily be able to destroy these monstrosities. In the end, it was the sheer power of Grock, and the mighty axe of Rurri that ended the unholy existence of these creatures, though Rurri found it was not wise to be on the receiving end of a mule kick, even if it was an undead one.

Gaming fun: The Quick and the Dead (Session 1, part 2)
Posted 8/7/2007 2:50:48 PM
The pages of the diary were old and faded, yellowed with age, but still legible. Below is what most interested the players:
=================================
15 Wintersend – Jacobi and I have tracked the foul creature to its lair beneath the city of Caycayn. These sewers stink with all the refuse from the people above. Hopefully we will kill this craven creature, this rat among men. Perhaps the rash of kidnappings will stop. Jacobi feels that this were-rat is responsible some how.
16 Wintersend – The creature was tougher than we thought, and had several “new” friends with it. Jacobi took a wound from a dire rat, but luckily it was just a normal creature. Finally we destroyed this foul beast, its form changing to that of a dark elf. While I am surprised that it was a drow, I am sure it was alone. The drow from my understanding do not allow such creatures to exist within their cities, much less a male one. This one was most likely an outcast.
17 Wintersend – Hauling the accumulated treasure to the surface took the better part of the day. Luckily this will allow me to better equip myself to fight these foul creatures. After some research Jacobi was able to discover the weakness of almost all of these were-creatures. Silver. A normal blow will often bounce off the hide of the foul beasts, a sword cut healing up right before your eyes. But silver seems to burn the wound into them, and sear their very soul.
22 Sunhigh This infestation is worse than any I have ever seen. Not only were rats, but an unholy alliance with werewolves and some tiger like creatures that I have never encountered before. These creatures aren’t half-creatures like their minions. They are unaffected by silver.
23 Sunhigh The minions of these creatures I can deal with. A good were-creature dies when my silvered sword slices them in two. But these abominations, these tiger like cat men are beyond my abilities. I do not think I can best these creatures, even with Jacobi at my side.
24 Sunhigh They came in the night, these cat creatures. I was able to drive them off, but they wounded Jacobi deeply. I fear he might not recover. They cast spells as well, these creatures, and laugh cruelly as they struck him down. The wounds he received will not close no matter what sort of healing magic we apply.
25 Sunhigh Jacobi is worse today. The wounds have actually grown. I don’t think the creatures did this naturally, it must be a cursed blade or something like that. I fear that Jacobi will not last much longer. He has already lost consciousness several times, and the color of his skin has turned a pale yellow. I must find the source of this infection. I was able to drag Jacobi to the local temple of Pelor, but the local priests cannot do anything for him. An acolyte was sent to the Castle Rosette to request a bishop come. Perhaps they can shed some light. I have asked the priests to do what they can to help him. I must go back into their lair in the mountains over looking the lake to see what I can find out.
26 Sunhigh With the help of a local mage, I have been able to sneak into the lair of these beasts. Though it cost me all my earnings from the loot we got from the were-creatures, these two potions of invisibility and two potions of silence have come in handy. I was able to get deep into their lair, and when the silence spell wore off, I heard them speaking. Most was some strange language I had never heard before. Once in a while the creatures would laugh and a word I recognized could be heard.
Rosette.
27 Sunhigh I was able to make it back out of the cave system without being detected. However bad news awaited my return. Jacobi did not make it. We will bury him today.
30 Sunhigh It took a few days, but I was able to put together a group of friends called in from all corners of the island. They were all friends of Jacobi, and together we will get our revenge on the creatures. Tonight they shall pay.
2 Harvestmoon Our losses were heavy, but the creatures were driven back into some shimmering portal. Without Hodgwoket, we did not feel safe to enter and give pursuit. The poor gnome took the brunt of an arrow of acid. I tried to get infront of the wizard, but I was too slow. His screams echoed horribly off the cave walls as one of the cat creatures laughed. His laughter was cut short however when Bonassa’s blade came poking out of his stomach from the back. Her sister Arikya, a cleric of pelor and classmate of Jacobi at the church seminary had found out that these creatures were Rhakshasha’s, evil creatures from some other plane. Only good aligned weapons could overcome the evil that was in them. It seems that Bonassa’s rapier did a much better job than my greatsword though.

Gaming fun: The Quick and the Dead (Session 1)
Posted 8/7/2007 12:52:36 AM
After returning from the wilderness, having dispatched the bandits that attacked the small town of Derlen's Ford a few nights before, the party finds that the town welcomes them with open arms. And why shouldn't they. After all the party valiantly infiltrated the lair of the Aranae bandits, freeing not only the kidnapped villagers, but also routing the bandits and freeing a traveling merchant! In appreciation, the villagers kept their word, and granted the deed to the old church on the far side of the vale.
After a brief discussion about the disposition of the oil they found the party used the oil of flesh to stone upon the statue that Grock had pulled from the depths of Mount Rolnith. Shanasha, against the plan stood ready to attack the small child should she be an agent of evil. After all, why was a small child turned to stone by an ancient sorceress, one who was supposedly not evil?
The oil took effect, and the small child awoke, screaming in pain. While in statue form her arm had been damaged, and now was useless. Perhaps a druid might be able to regenerate the arm, but no one here has the power. After the child calmed down, she started to cry.
Grock, ever the gentle giant tried to comfort her. Gerda, the unassuming gnome spoke to the child and asked her what her name was. The child told them she was Princess Jelania, of the kingdom of Belnot. No one had ever heard of this kingdom, and the party pressed the child for more information.
It turns out the child was out with her guard when they came upon a glen surrounded by gorgeous cherry trees in bloom. Soon, a fell spell took hold on them, and they all fell into a deep slumber. When they awoke, they were in a strange place, surrounded by mountains. The captain of the princess's guard led the way and eventually they found the entrance to a cave. As it was winter they guards and the princess needed shelter while they tried to figure out where they were. Eventually they ended up deep within the cave, having explored the complex. Suddenly and before her eyes, all here companions were being turned to stone. The last thing she remembered was seeing her guard captain reaching towards her.
The party had decided to help the child return to her kingdom and did some research at the local temple. It turns out the kingdom of Belnot has not existed for over 400 years, and fell into disarray when the king and queen had lost their child. Jalania again started to cry, but stopped suddenly, remembering an artifact that only the royal house of Belnot could activate that might once again return the kingdom to its former glory.
Shanasha, not entirely convinced that this was the best thing to do, convinced the young girl and the party that they would return Jalenia to her kingdom, but first they needed to attend to their local business, that of clearing out the old church to establish a base.
The party left Jalenia in the care of the local priest who promised to try to find a druid to heal her arm. Meanwhile they set out for the church at the far end of the vale.
After about 3 hours they came upon a scene of carnage. A farmhouse along the edge of the woods showed signs of a battle, with the doors smashed in. The party investigated and discovered a scene of horror, and a tale of woe.
In the center of the main room, a body, barely recognizable for all the tears and cuts lay on the floor reaching towards a chest in the corner. The party discovered a cache of silver weapons, and continued to check out the house. Climbing the ladder to the loft they discover a double room with a divider, on one side it was obviously a childs room, and on the other the parents. Searching the room they came upon the diary of the farmer...

Gaming fun: It has begun . .
Posted 8/7/2007 12:23:39 AM
The creativity bug has struck me once again. Here is the situation:
My players really enjoyed the last home made adventure I ran them through (see other posts within this category), and have begged me to write another. Well, I resurrected an older adventure I had begun writing, and am once again prepping them for the adventure. This time, instead of demonic creatures, they will be fighting undead, yada, yada, yada (will elaborate more later).
But, here is where the creativity comes in. I have started modeling using paper, and found ways to make the paper more durable. So, a little (tiny) bit about the adventure site:
It is in an abandoned church to WeeJas (D&D fans will know this is the god of death, nuetral, etc). It is more of a cathedral (as it is HUGE). The players have been given the property by the local townsfolk, as most of the townsfolk avoid the area due to a band of hobgoblins (the players barely took care of them.. partially because they were led by a 9th level half-giant fighter LOL), and other fearful creatures as well as rumors of foul undead. ANYWHOOOOOO.....
The property has a large cathedral, and a rather large graveyard attached to it. How the players are going to deal with the fact that to move the graves would probably be bad, I don't know yet LOL.
So I have created a mausoleum. Well, 2 so far, 1 is destroyed, one intact. I have plans on at least 4-6 more, plus I have also created about 22 individual graves. When this is all done, I will have several "boards" with grids, as well as a 6" high model of the cathedral (which equates to 30' at standard 1" = 5' d&d scale), which is also 175 by 125 (35" long, by 23 inches wide), 2 out buildings, 1 circle of stones (complete with pond and statue in center), etc... LOL
Pictures to follow in later posts, as well as synopsis of the game.

Gah.. the blood
Posted 7/20/2007 3:05:09 PM
So, I went back to Dr. Evil yesterday (actually, she is very nice, and does a great job.. but she is a dentist).
Dr. Evil: So, are you ready to have that last wisdom tooth taken out of your head Mr. Powers? Hmmm? With this operation I will finally have the last of your MoJo! Muhahahahahh *pinky to mouth* Powers: Do your worst, man. You can't take away my MoJo with such a simple procedure, man. It is a part of my being, don't you know. Not just my smile. Dr. Evil: Ah, but the discomfort you will feel is nothing to the other effects...muhuuhuhahaha. Bring in the fembots! *enter the dental assistant with a variety of tools that would make Freddy Kruger flinch, and makes the tools in Hostel look like pillows and marshmallows. Dr. Evil: First, I will inject you with this serum, to numb your senses. You will feel a little pinch. *cut to a scene with a needle the size of a fishing pole, being jabbed repeatedly in and out of the gum, while Dr. Evil says it will only be a little pinch. Meanwhile Austin is doing the butt crawl down the dentist chair as tears well up in his eyes. 15 minutes later, Dr. Evil returns. Dr. Evil: Now this will only feel a little pressure. Austin: Pressure my left hiney! You are pulling my eye out though my mouth! My nose is collapsing! *plink* Dr. Evil: There, now to stitch you up so you can no longer put your MoJo back. *cut to a scene of Dr. Evil stitching like a madman (woman) then stuffing gauze into Austin's mouth. Dr. Evil: Fembot! give him some more gauze and a prescription for codeine.
...
It bled for 6 hours.. gah. i hate having wisdom teeth pulled. Luckilly that was the last one.
