This was a memorial mural I did recently. This sort of thing is not what I'd normally do, but the story of the slain youth (19yrs) caught my eye and I did this "ONE TIME ONLY!!" charity mural for around 1/8 the cost. It was tricky because of being totally by myself and not having the assistants normally given. Also, using a simple ladder instead of the hydrolic lifts or cherry picker machine to lift me and place me comfortably. I had to do it the "Old Fashioned Way," with a couple of leaning ladders. I'm going to show the steps that led to this final result below...

I'm going to show how to take an empty wall and produce whatever image you like JUMBO_SIZE!!...
1. Measure the space you wish to paint, both height and width. Squaring each corner. Say you measure the wall as 20ft wide by 15ft high ex.
2. Do a proportional drawing/painting of what you want, this is your model. By proportional, I mean
a scale model. If the wall is 20ftx15ft you may want to do a scale model of either 20inches x 15 inches. Each square inch of your drawing equals 1foot of the wall.
3. The next step you grid your scale model with lines both horizontal and vertical to illustrate the 1inch =1 foot. To protect the original drawing/painting you could go to Kinkos and make color xerox's of your image and freely draw the lines so you don't have to damage your original artwork (I prefer this). You could either overlay tracing paper over the original to make the lines,or for a clearer image use clear acetate and draw the lines with a Sharpy.
4. Prepare the wall, via sanding it, washing it, plastering the cracks. If you do substantial cement/plastering on the wall it may take 3-4 weeks to dry properly before you should responsibly apply any paint.

5.Next I applied a clear acrylic sealer that would normally go on at the finish, but the wall was so porous that I put it on at the beginning to allow my primer coat to go on smoothly.Otherwise, the wall was going to soak it up like a sponge.
6. I coated the wall with a medium grey tinted primer. I prefer a medium tone of a color, as opposed to stark white. Here I chse white mixed with Paynes Grey (it appears black right out of the can).
7. Next, snap lines exactly 1 foot apart had to be snapped then drawn out both horizontally then vertically. Since in this case I was by my self , it was a bit tricky and I had to hold down one endof the powdered snap line with duck tape for each 1ft line.
8. Now to start laying in the image from the smaller drawing to the 10x scale size, utilizing the 1inch squares and 1ft squares. The important thing is to get down and step away every 45min to an hour to check the work's accuracy...

Anyone who knows me realizes that I am completely unable to be converted to any organized religion. Not just because I am a person who bases his understanding of life on logic, reality and being more philosophically bent, but also because of some completely bizarre historical religious practices and beliefs I noticed some folks were believing and continue to. For example....

*****BY THE WAY, IN CASE ANYONE HASN'T FIGURED THIS OUT, I'M PIECEMEALING THIS AND MY NEXT BLOG AS I GO ALONG BECAUSE I AM BUSY PAINTING MURAL PROJECTS.*****

-"The Family"
Name: The Family (also The Family of Love); founded as The Children of God
Founder: David Brandt Berg; Berg was affectionately known as "Moses David," "Mo,""Father David," and "Dad" to Family members.

Date of Birth and Death: 1919-1994
Birth Place: Oakland, California

Year Founded: 1968

Dr. Phil Show-
(Original Air Date: 10/03/05) Imagine growing up in a cult where you are forced to have sex with strangers -- when you’re as young as 5. Dr. Phil talks to people who escaped the group known as the Children of God, and need help moving on. Meet a daughter who says she can’t forgive her father for the years of painful abuse she suffered at the hands of this cult. How can she reconnect with her dad and start trusting again? Plus, China and her husband, John, are building a new life after leaving the group, where they were forced to have sex with strangers when they were both underage. They’ve had a difficult time adjusting to the outside world, and China wonders if she should prosecute her parents for abuse.

Montel Williams - Sex Abuse and Mind Control: Raised In A Cult

freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/c/children/.

To be continued...

***ONE THING I SEE AS A PATTERN W/ CULTS (ESPECIALLY IN THE US) IS, THAT THERE IS ALWAYS A CHARISMATIC LEADER,WHO GENERALLY HAS A MESSIANIC COMPLEX PERSONALITY. GENERALLY, THE WOMEN ARE REQUIRED TO OFFER THEMSELVES SEXUALLY TO THAT LEADER (OR THE LEADER'S DISCIPLES, AS WELL). THAT LEADER SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A "PERSONAL CONNECTION" WITH GOD (OR AT LEAST CONVINCES HIS FOLLOWERS OF THAT FACT).***

On this note,I go to Mormonism....

-Mormons and FDLS folks stemmed originally from Joseph Smith. In my book, a man who wasa snake-oil salesman-type figure, that women generally found attractive. This entry is a bit tricky because Mormonism or Latter Day Saints is a well respected religion with more than 12 million followers and not considered a cult. Also, some people, I consider probably good/decent folks like: The Osmonds, Steve Young (great great grandson of Brigham Young),even presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Also, the main subject of the HBO series "Big Love" (polygamy) But I maintain, that, if this was established today it would certainly fit into the category of "Cult"
Let me explain why:

Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844) was the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.the title Mormon comes from a man named Mormon, who followers belive lived in the 1000yrs (600BC - 421AD)Who had a son Moroni that gave him Golden Plates, where the written record of North America and the Indians that fell away from the initial"Enlightenment." Jos. smith was ordered by Moroni to tranlate the golden plates that were written in ancient Hebrew (he was given the ability to translate this mysteriously). Also, the tablets offered stories telling that God resides near the planet Kolob. Joseph Smith lost/buried those tablets, and subsequently forgot the ability to translate the ancient Hebrew.-Interesting stuff!
Not before convincing his growing flock of believersthat they should grow their new church by polygamy-not popular with the menfolk of non-believers. He move the religion from Palmyra NY, to Ohio,to Missouri, to Illinois. When he decided to run for president, both be and his brother were killed by a mob in Carthage illinois. His # 1 disciple, Brigham Young feared everyone was in jeopardy, so they moved everyon to Utah on a very arduous and deadly religious exodus.Hence, that is where Mormonism flourishes today establishing polygamy as a religious right for themselves until "OFFICIALLY" being outlawed in 1890.Obviously ,there have been some "Fundementalists" splinter groups that to this day continue the polygamy as in the past,eg: Warren Jeffs group Warren Jeffs:
The approximately 10,000 members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe God speaks through Jeffs, who is known as the "The Prophet."
photo

Warren Jeffs' own half brother says the cult leader used his position as their father's favorite to engage in sexual activity with young girls and boys.

The Mountain Meadow Massacre on (ironically Sept.11th)

-The Mountain Meadows Massacre occurred on Friday, September 11, 1857 in Mountain Meadows, Utah , several miles south of Enterprise in Washington County along the Old Spanish Trail.
Links to September Dawn
The victims of the massacre were from Arkansas and were members of the Fancher-Baker wagon train. The leader of the wagon train was my 3rd great Uncle Alexander Fancher. The Fancher party was headed to his older brother and my great grandfather John Fancher's Cattle Ranch 50 miles north of Visalia, California . This was Alexander Fancher's 3rd trip to California , and he is listed in the 1850 San Diego, Census.
The settlers were besiege for five days, beginning on Monday, September 7, 1857 and on the 5th day surrendered under a flag of truce to Brigham Young's adopted son and confidant John Doyle Lee. The emigrants knew when the siege started that their attackers were Mormon's but had very little choice but to surrender since they were very low on supplies.

The Mormon's had them surrender all their worldly belongings worth approximately $300,000 for safe passage back to Cedar City , Utah. While enroute to Cedar City and within one mile of the siege site a call of “Do your Duty” was given, whereupon all the adult men were shot by Mormons. The women and older children were then killed by Mormons, with the assistance of the Indians. Most of the Mormons were dressed as Indians and had on war paint. According to testimony there were very few Indians that participated in the killing.

-A movie "Tears of Kali," I thought was great and intriguing tells 3 vignettes about a true cult, the Taylor-Eriksson cult. Very disturbing to know folks around the world would travel and allow themselves to endure pain to see Nirvana. Kali, by the way, was a female Indian goddess of pain.
Tears of Kali returns to the early eighties and plunges into a nightmarish scenario wrought when several EST-like groups establish themselves in India. One of the more extreme communes, the Taylor-Eriksson cult, carries its "quest for self-knowledge" to a malevolent end, with numerous group members trapped, tortured, murdered and mutilated. Tears of Kali tells their twisted and disturbing story.

Next: Scientologists,Branch Davidians, nd Jim Jones in Guyana and Kool-Aid....

I don't know what to say because it's so confusing to me and I don't know all the circumstances. To say it is a tragedy would be a mild statement.WHY IS THERE SO MUCH VIOLENCE IN THIS WORLD AND ESPECIALLY IN THIS COUNTRY NOW??!!!!! WHY???

THERE IS NOTHING SUPERNATURAL OUT THERE PEOPLE!!!!

Can anyone sane, honestly say that they have seen, experienced or participated in something truly Supernatural and can legitimately prove it?

If you are really honest with yourself, if look back on your entire life,
I'd be willing to bet my life, that the cold, sobering truth would be NO!

"Am I right?" I'm not talking about some David Blain floating in a bubble, crap. No, I mean some of the things that, over the years, various people have put stock in being bonified. Don't get me wrong, I truly want to have witnessed anything that has spawned mythology, legends, religions, paranormal beliefs etc. I used to read every book I could find on the paranormal, strange events in the Bermuda Triangle, space aliens, reincarnation ghosts, spoon benders back when the paperback books were more of the ilk of pulp fiction (a la Erik von Daniken etc.). No matter what a person of faith believes, or tries to tell me, I cannot believe something is true unless I see it personally. I respect the passion devotees of a particular faith may have, but I truly think that no one on this planet has ever been enlightened with the voice or image of a Superior Being or God. Most people of faith may have a problem with that about me. I think that there probably IS a Superior Being. I just think that, we as a species, are not evolved enough yet t comprehend (let alone communicate)with it. I think that, as mankind is (apparently) the most intelligent animals in Earth's history. Having developed various kinds and levels of communications amongst ourselves and commands with domesticated animals, we feel we should have MORE.
Meaning, creating stories of folks with supernatural powers. God, telling only (SPECIFIC) individuals the "truth of our existence and our purpose." Bottom line is: People are Arrogant!! We are creatures that, in most cases would go insane if they did not believe that they had a connection with something "special," or the ability to create a miracle (TEL EVANGELISTS), knowledge of what happens after we die, (this scares most everyone), NOBODY KNOWS!

Instead of MASTERING how to be kind, benevolent, non-violent, with empathetic hearts to ALL people!! Most people throughout history have shown they'd RATHER wear a badge of religion, culture or political bent that entitles them to the opposite. By virtue of this very FACT that man cannot CONTROL THIS PART OF HIMSELF, dictates (to me) mankind has a LONG WAY to go to comprehend a HIGHER PLANE OF EXISTENCE and/or SUPERIOR BEING!!!!

Such as:
-Talking to the Dead

-Levitating Yogis in India

http://www.ellusionist.com/order/king.htm

-Witnessing U.F.O.'s (Can you say 'Mormon?')

The Audacity to say you've been abducted by Extra-Terrestrials

-The Shamelessness to say Space Aliens Probed you or made you Pregnant!!

-To believe in Ghosts while supposing to be a MATURE adult

-To tell people that you have Magical Powers - so "Watch Out!"

-Belief in Vampires, Big foot, Fairies, Demons, -Anyone Sprouting wings when they die

-Spontaneous Human Combustion (Smoking in Bed )

-The Bermuda Triangle being a doorway to another Dimension

-Telekinesis (Moving things w/your Mind)

-Mind Reading

-Being Able to Tell the Future (not guessing)..

-Being Possessed by the Devil

-Believing in the Devil

There isn't one person out there who can PROVE any of the above.

But so what.
Really, is it so awful to know what is real in life?

Why should anyone claim to know what happens after we die? How do you prove crap like that? You don't and can't!! Don't get me wrong, I believe there are things in life that are still mysterious. But that is because all the answers are not known. Just because no one knows how many grains of sand there are in the world doesn't mean a number isn't there. It's just not important. Most things in life are routine, predictable, maybe boring, but personal in each life and important to some. There's nothing Supernatural out there. CRY ALL YOU WANT! The beauty of being human is that we are ALIVE, with a CONSCIOUSNESS and ABILITY TO CREATE OUR OWN HAPPINESS, FUTURE AND TRUE PEACE OF MIND. By hard work, kindness, good will and a willingness to develop positively our species we may SIMPLY ACCOMPLISH BEING GOOD PEOPLE NOW!!

After that, "Who Knows?!!!"
(Mind you this is one simple man's thoughts. Usually kept to himself)

These 2 I worked on with John Lewis a master muralist and close friend who guided me and helped turn my skills as an oil painting portrait artist to a acrylic paing muralist.

The first mural below my assignment was to do hair, hands and fabric.

That's me before losing 15lbs from working in the sun!

This next one is a mural dedicated to "Chick Davis," a black local hero in Philly. He was a semi-pro basketball player, negro-league baseball player and VERY FAMOUS POOL SHARK! He once beat Willie Moscovie (ranked #1 in the world at the time). The movies "The HUSTLER" and "The COLOR OF MONEY" were both based on Willie Moscovie. John Lewis and I painted that moment in his proud life where he beat the great Willie Moscovie. He opened the doors in Philly for young black to be allowed to play in pool halls that he both bought and built during the 1960's and opened nightclubs that allowed blacks to dance in downtown Philly.
