Phua Chu Kang’s favourite words, “Don’t play, play….” Heed it.

As the Bursar trends higher along with its global counterparts; be weary. A bubble is slowly being created. Since the middle of 2006, the market has been firming up and many had made substantial gains on their counters. How far will it go before the market goes bust?

Joseph E. Stiglitz (1990) in his research paper on Symposium on Bubbles, defined “bubble” as “the reason that the price is high today is only because investors believe that the selling price will be higher tomorrow. When “fundamental” factors do not seem to justify such a price, then a bubble exists”.

When players liquidate their shares and keep their capital and then play on their profits which are “house money”, this will be a warning stage. They have nothing really to lose. Genuine investors should get ready to exit once their counters make ‘enough’ profits

A major portion of our stock prices have gone beyond fundamentals. The market has shown irrational behaviour. Blue chips have gone to stratospheric heights. Second Board counters are moribund and MESDAQ is still napping away.
Stock prices are continuously revised upwards by analysts as there are limited stocks to recommend. You can see analysts supporting each other on these picks. This will mislead investors to buy them at higher risks. When more people start to invest, it will cause higher stock returns, and the market in turn will touch greater heights. This is the bubble in a Ponzi game- a pyramid step-sister of sorts.

A spate of bad news in succession will cause the pyramid to be inverted and everyone will run helter-skelter. Market then goes into a tail-spin and dive.

Two strategies:

Make and run
Buy into defensive stocks and take your risks.

I don’t know whether it happens in other places but it looks like Malaysia has its share of ‘firsts’ as well.

A local Malaysian daily, Harian Metro, reported that students are selling their bodies for a mere pre-paid card top-up of 10 ringgits (US3). This is really basement prices we are talking about.

These girl students first chat up the men on the internet and after regular telephone sex sessions, did the real thing with them afterwards. All for a top-up.

A first-persons report said that most of these girls are those who have been jilted or that their boyfriends have been two timing them.

What do you think is the connection between the two words; gazebo and placebo?

A gazebo is a structure such as a pavilion or summer house- likely to be derived from the Scandinavian word 'gaze' which means 'to stare or gape'. The '-ebo' part of the word is from Latin meaning "I will...".

Placebo is a pill or capsule having no pharmacological effect given to satisfy a patient who presupposes it to be medicine especially hypochondriacs.

Placebo is pure Latin, a singular of the verb 'placere' meaning, "I will please". From this word, we have words like - please, plead, placid, pleasant and complacent.

It is the element of 'expectation' that will bring home the direct relationship of these two words; gazebo and placebo.

As a person would expect to gaze out on a lovely scene from a gazebo; a patient would expect to have a pleasing effect from a placebo. And that believe me, lies the connection.

Stewart Edelstein's 'Dubious Doublets' is one gem of a book if you are into etymology. A great read, you will be highly amused at the unlikely derivatives that had sprung from the same root. You may not see the obvious inter-relationship because cultural adoption and transformation over time have made them so alien to each other.

Poem derives from the Greek word poiein meaning to 'make or create'. It was used by Greek society to describe the creation of artists such as musicians, painters and writers as what they create are 'forms that do not exist in nature'. In time, the word poiein transformed itself to poem as we know it today.

The other derivatives of this word are pharmacopaeia; a druggist's collection of drugs, prosopopoeia and onomatopaeia. Prosopopoeia is a figure of speech in which an inanimate object or abstraction is endowed with human qualities or possessing human form. Example: Mother Earth and Father Time. Onomatopaeia is the word for the imitation of sounds. You can surely recall the cacophanous sounds such as bang, buzz, splatter, twang and zoom from cartoons and comics and then there are the animal sounds like the moo of a cow, the oink of a pig and the a bow-wow of a dog.

Some people have even suggested that language could have originated from onomatopaeia. A good example will be the word mao in Chinese for a cat's meow.

One great book to read to better understand the English language.

Call it what you may. Butterflies in your stomach, nerves, fainting spells - whatever. The truth is, there is this unknown fear gnawing at your vitals. You cannot sit still. You are awaiting for an event to take place. You are impatient for something to materialize. You have a longing desire to meet a loved one. You have a a hope or a wish you want to see come true. You have anxiety pangs

A man awaiting the birth of his first child will prance up and down the waiting area of the maternity hospital. The student taking an examination will be biting his lips and nails while sweating profusely in his palms. Some just need to go to the toilet all the time.

I can bear with all the above situations. But what about the risk taker who puts his hard-earned money playing the stock market? He experiences fear, pain and anxiety every time his stocks go down or when the stock market melts down. He cannot comprehend his bad luck. He had knots in his stomach and gut area. He is a potential stomach ulcer candidate.

Would you sympathize with him?

You surely have your own experiences with anxiety pangs. Care to tell?

Reading this poem brings me to only one conclusion. The ideal man is an impossibility. Rudyard Kipling imagined the ideal man to be almost like god. To say that he is God is sacrilegious. To possess all the inner core values of a pure heart and to be able to withstand all the pressures of the world is an unlikely combination. He that has is God. He was here and He has gone but He will return. He is our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Let us look closely at the principles in the the poem.

When the world has gone mad and blame it on you, remain cool.
When all man distrust you, trust in yourself and forgive them.
When the world lies about you, don't engage in the blame game.
If the world hates you, do not hate them in return.
When knaves twist the truth of what you say, bear it.
When what you have given to life has been broken, be ready to begin anew.
When you lose everything in a game of chance, take it in stride and start again.
When your whole body is almost giving up, will it to hold on.

If you have dreams, do not let them be your master.
If you can think, do and act on them.

Be a person of integrity at all times.
Treat every one equally
Treat success and failure as natural occurrences.
Be humble as you walk with kings and the common folks.
Do not let friends and foes disturb your inner peace.
Spend every minute of your life wisely

So are the principles listed above possible for man to achieve? Unlikely; for we bear the sins of the forefathers. I believe Rudyard Kipling's main intention of writing the poem is to provoke man to aspire to be better with each passing day.

What do you think?

Just read a book titled 'The Science of Getting Rich' written by Wallace D Wattles, a post Civil War writer in the USA. An easy read, it is prescriptive in general terms on the science of getting rich. His theory is fully premised on the principles of Faith, Purpose and Gratitude.

Wallace, after studying and meditating on the various faiths, claimed he had discovered the principles that lead to a rich and wealthy life. He became a great educationist and teacher after writing this book. Napolean Hill, Anthony Robbins and Bob Proctor has read his book and found that it was "life transforming".

According to Wallace, his book is a pragmatic manual for those in need of money. If you want to become rich, follow his spiritual and mental approach and its principles by faith.

Wallace believes one must have money to have a really complete and successful life. We develop our mind, soul and body by using things. To have these things we must have the money to buy them.To acquire the money, we must understand first the science of getting rich.

To become rich, you must have a strong, clear and definitive template in your mind of what you really desire. The 'thinking stuff',from which all things are made, will realize your desire. That is the power of thought! The accompanying preconditions. You must achieve it in a creative manner. You must be grateful to God for granting your wish. Wallace advised that you keep your purpose in mind at all times until it becomes a reality. To quote Wallace, "You must do everyday all you can do that day, taking care to do it as successful as you can.You must give to every man to use value in excess of the cash value you receive."

If you put into practice his principles, you will certainly get rich. According to Wallace, the 'riches you receive will be in exact proportion to the definitiveness of your vision, the fixity of your purpose, the steadiness of your faith and the depth of your gratitude".

Quote of the Day:

"What I want for myself,I want for everybody." "Golden Rule" Jones

RCE Under the Microscope

After restructuring and moving on to the Main Board, RCE Capital (RCE) stirred market excitement in early April 2007, when a few tranches of its shares amounting to 62 million shares (9.59 % issued capital) were sold off-market to undisclosed parties. It was done at 76 sen valuing the shares at RM47.26 million.

Stock market data indicated that 28.21 million were transacted at RM20.31 million or 72 sen each while another two blocks comprising 11.19 million shares and 22.5 million shares were done at RM8.95 million and RM18 million respectively or 80 sen a piece. One of the likely buyers was HSBC Holdings PLC which announced that it has increased its shares in RCE to 9.029% after buying an additional 50 million shares in the market.

On 17 April, more news was to follow. This time, some 120 million shares representing a 19% stake in the company were placed out to a number of investors, at prices ranging from 65 to 69 sen. The major takers were apparently Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, Hong Kong-based Jardine Fleming group, and Public Mutual Bhd. It also said that General Electric Capital Corp could be another interested party.

Hovering around the 30-40 sen band for most of December 2006, RCE showed life from 8 January 2007. It moved up to the 50 sen level. By March 13, it moved up to the 60 sen level. The 70 sen level was breached on 26 March. From April 9th, it went beyond 80 sen and briefly touched 90 sen on 16th April. It is now consolidating on a narrow price band of 80-82 sen.

Volume analysis shows that the highest volume was on 16th April where it touched 36.3 million shares. The other days with heavy volumes were 18th April (25.4 million),9th April (22.8 million),23rd April (17.1 million), 10th April (15.5 million) and 4thApril (15.4 million).

Given all the market signals, I believe RCE shares will start moving again if market firms up next week. I can see RCE shares going beyond RM1 by mid May 2007, assuming there are no immediate global shocks.

On 4th May 2007, RCE traded at 92.5 sen. Volume at 11.15 a.m. was beyond 10 million shares. So if you have bought it last week, you should have made 10 sen per share.
