Gay Themed Book at an Illinois School

(go to www.cnn.com for the whole video "book flap")

Some parents are unhappy about a gay themed book present in the library of a school. This book is about a relationship between two male penguins who adopted an abandon egg and hatched it raising the baby penguin as there own. The book is based on a true story from the zoo in New York's Central Park.

Now one suggestion that parents had was to segregate the book from other books making available to children only with parents permission. It was stated that the Parents should decided when the child is ready for this book. Now I'm not disagreeing with this point because obviously parents have the right to expose and not expose their children to what they wish (with in reason of course). However, this idea of the parents deciding when to expose the child to things could go on for almost every book in the library.

One women in the video made a good point when she said that they had books about different religions, different races and so forth in the library making this book no different and therefore making the book appropriate. Now I know some will say religion and races are totally different than this, but really it's all part of culture and it's something that children will all be exposed to eventually. As with many things the earlier they are exposed to it the more they will know and the more accepting they maybe. Of course not all parents are accepting so that could be why they would not want their child to learn about same sex relationships.

Personally I think that kids should know, we all know that kids tend to ask questions at awkward times and tend to embarrass their parents. So imagine walking down the street and your child sees to adult men or two adult women holding hands and asks rather loudly (with in ear shot of these two individuals) why those two boys or two girls are holding hands. How would you tactfully tell your child what is going on with out lying to the child or offending anyone? Maybe the situation could have been avoided if you would have read that book about the penguins and talked to your child about it.

I personally see nothing wrong with the book and no reason to ban it or make it special permission. Children need to know things so that they can become comfortable in their environment and become well educated adults. I am consistently amazed at the things that kids will pick up on, here's a thought imagine the things your kids might know know that you have unintentionally tought them. Things they heard you talking about when you thought they weren't listening or things you didn't think they understood so you talked about them right infront of them. They know more and understand more than we sometimes give them credit for; even though they may not be able to express these things they know them. It really is utterly amazing!

Banning this book or segregating it would be (other than illegal more than likely) a shame there is no reason for it. The theme is a part of our culture no matter how much you agree with it or disagree with it.

Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism is a socai anxiety disorder that is a physical reaction to stress and anxiety. The children affected by this disorder literally can not talk in situations, such as school, that are stressful or that induce anxiety. These children can speak and can understand until these specific stress inducing situation that bring on the selective mutism symptoms. These children will talk to there parents and some close friends; in some cases they will talk to other children in their class but not their teachers. This disorder is different depending on the child as most disorders are.

I had never heard of this specific disease until I saw the article on the early shows website called "Shy Beyond Words" (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/16/earlyshow/health/main2188785.shtml).

Therapy can and does assist in helping these children, I am having a hard time finding good info. on the therapy so I will look some more and see what I can come up with for actual treatment options and post another blog accordingly.

Autism and Mirror Neurons

Found a very interesting website that I highly recommend to anyone who is remotely interested in science. The site www.sciencedaily.com is a great source for the latest in science research news. I found an interesting article about autism being linked to mirror neurons and the possible treaments/therapies that could result from this finding.

Mirror neurons, located in the premotor cortex, help us to learn things. When we perform an act or we see someone else perform an act these neurons fire, allowing us to observe and understand these actions. By observing and understanding these acts we learn to do them. Mirror neurons, or monkey see monkey do neurons as they are nicknamed, allow us to learn not only physical acts of movement but also higher cognitive function such as language.

This study has supported the hypothesis that individuals with autism have disfunctional mirror neurons. Mirror neurons in individuals with autism respond only to the autistic persons movement resulting in the deficits of the disease.

Now this all makes perfect sense I would say considering the major symptoms of Autism are social deficits. Many individuals that suffer from autism don't make eye contact, they don't speak or speak ery little, some in extreme cases there is very minimal physical movement, these individuals can have a very limited diet and other things that innvolve learning from the people that surround us.

A suggestion in the article for a therapy involved using mirrors and the persons own movement to trick the brain. This mirror brain trick has been used with amputees to make their brains believe that the missing limb has been restored therefore eliminating pain. So the idea with autism is that if the mirror neurons of autistic individuals only respond to their own movement that by using a mirror we can use the persons movement to trick the brain into thinking that it is someone else moving.

This therapy, according to the article, will be a possibility but will not for sometime. They still have more research to do however a link has been made to a specific region of the brain so this is a big step in the right direction.
