What is “wisdom” and where do you find it in society today? Why begin a service learning class with a reflection on wisdom (does that make sense to you?). Since you all have read the Apology before, please include some reflections on the document now, three years later. Is it any more meaningful now? What does your reaction say about your educational experience at Loras?

In society today, I think that everyone carries a certain amount of wisdom in one area or another and I think that a lot of wisdom comes from the personal experiences that each one of us goes through. Starting service learning out with a reflection on wisdom is a reminder of how individuals that we will encounter will have wisdom in their own ways to share with us. Having been a majority in Dubuque, I think that there will be a lot of opportunities to gain knowledge and wisdom from people who have hardships in the same town that many other individuals thrive in.

Being a bit younger than the rest of the service learning class, this has been my first opportunity to read Apology. For me, I guess it was kind of depressing because I know that I have tried to strive to do what I think is right despite prejudices or society's expectations but I feel that I have fallen short, especially in some instances for my own well-being.

I think that I have had a good educational experience but I think that I have gained a lot of personal lessons through experiences that I have gone through, that are more comparable to Plato, outside of the classroom. My idea of wisdom and thinking makes it seem as if I need to use what God has given me for talent/knowledge and use it for what I feel is just regardless of what society says or throws at me. I think classes like democracy allowed me to see that and allowed me to see both sides and the wisdom behind different views because of situational differences. So, through classes and living experiences and other problems or frustrating times, I think that I have broadened the amount of wisdom that I carry with me along with many other individuals on campus.
